Parent Orientation

Before Orientation

  • Have your student reserve a space at an Orientation session
Once your student has received their letter of acceptance from FIU Admissions and has paid the required $200 Admissions deposit, he or she will be able to sign up for Orientation. Your student will then need to go into their MYFIU account, and register him or herself and any guests to attend Orientation. If your student has any problems signing up for Orientation, they can contact our office.

Orientation and Commuter Student Services

  • Payment of Orientation
All Orientation fees for students and guests will be charged to the student’s Panthersoft account and must be paid prior to the Orientation session. The cost of the Freshman Orientation is $90, and Transfer Orientation is $35. The fee will automatically appear on the students' account once they register for classes. If you or another guest would like to attend the Orientation session, the Parent/Guest fee is $40 per guest for Freshman Orientation and $20 per guest for Transfer Orientation.

  • Have your student turn in Health Forms
As a pre-requisite to registration, Florida International University requires all students to comply with the following immunization policy regulations from the Florida Board of Governors regarding immunity of:

Any written document must be signed by a physician (M.D. or D.O.), a nurse practitioner or a registered nurse and must be mailed, sent via fax, or physically brought to University Health Services on either campus at least four weeks prior to registration. Phone calls from your physician are not acceptable.

If you must register and do not have proof of your immunization status, you can safely receive an MMR vaccine prior to the registration process and a second dose after 30 days - assuming you have no medical contradictions to receiving the vaccine(s) as determined by your physician. All of the required vaccines can be administered by FIU's University Health Services either at the University Park or the Biscayne Bay Campus.
To minimize problems and/or delays when registering, proof of immunization must be submitted to the FIU University Health Services department at least four weeks prior to registration. For your convenience, documents may be mailed or faxed. For our address, fax, and phone numbers or for more detailed information, please visit our Immunization website at: http://www.fiu.edu/~health/immunization/index.html
Students who do not provide proof of immunization will not be able to register for classes at Orientation.

  • Financial Aid
For questions about financial aid, your student should visit her or his Panthersoft account to make sure all of the paperwork is being processed. If you and your student would like to visit the Office of Financial Aid, you will have some time in the afternoon of Day 2 of Freshman Orientation to swing by the office with your student, or you can visit their office during their regular office hours. More answers to your questions about financial aid can be found on the financial aid website at: http://finaid.fiu.edu/

To receive financial assistance your student must be fully admitted to an FIU degree program or be enrolled in a qualified certificate program.

To receive need-based assistance your student must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) . Completing the FAFSA correctly and submitting any requested document(s) by the annual priority deadline date of March 1st, increases your student’s potential to receive the maximum financial aid for which she or he is eligible.

  • Make a checklist
The Parent Orientation runs separately but concurrently with the Freshman Orientation; contact between families and students is limited throughout the day. Make a list of the things that you would like to accomplish while here at FIU so that you and your student can make necessary arrangements.

  • Have your student apply for On-Campus Housing
If your student is interested in living in the residence halls, apply as soon as possible! To find out more about the application process, encourage your student to visit the Housing and Residence Life website at: http://www.housing.fiu.edu

  • Encourage your student to consider the FIGs program
FIU can be a large place with over 37,000 students. FIGs (First-Year Interest Groups) place first-semester freshmen into small “learning communities” of twenty-four students with similar interests, often with the same intended majors. FIGs make students feel at home at FIU. FIGs create closer relationships with both fellow students and professors, and that translates into more involvement and a more positive transition to college life. Encourage your student to visit the FIGs website for more information. http://www.fiu.edu/~figs/

During Orientation

  • Take a tour of the Residence Halls – University Housing
If your student will be living on campus, or if you are curious about seeing the Residence Halls, there will be a tour of the Residence Halls during dinner on Day 1. A Peer Advisor will escort you and your student to the Residence Hall. This is the perfect opportunity to see a room or ask questions of the Residence Life Staff.

  • Learn about Financial Aid
Your student can view his or her Financial Aid status under the Panthersoft system. There will also be a representative from the Financial Aid office to present information and answer questions about Financial Aid during the Orientation program.

  • Explore meal plan options through Dining Services
If your student is interested in a meal plan, a representative from Panther Dining Services will provide a brief presentation and will answer questions for you. You will also have the opportunity to have meals at the Fresh Food Company to experience a taste of what your student can expect.  For more information, visit: http://pantherdining.com

  • Visit the Bookstore
While you are visiting campus, take some time to get familiar with the FIU bookstore. Students can purchase their books at the bookstore or on-line after they register for classes. A schedule is needed in order to purchase books. Students and parents can also purchase FIU gear, accessories, and clothing to show their FIU Spirit!

  • Have your student obtain their parking permit
