Program Overview
It is extremely important that you thoroughly read the information listed below as you should find the answers to many of your questions. If after reading this webpage you still have concerns please contact the orientation office.
During your ONE DAY orientation program, you will have the opportunity to take a campus tour, begin the advising process, learn about Campus Life, Freshman Interest Groups (FIG), and meet your Peer Advisor. You will also receive information about your College/School in which your major is housed and be allowed time for selecting classes with your Academic Advisor. In order to register for classes, you must meet with an Advisor; therefore this orientation program is mandatory for all Freshmen.
The Math Placement Exam
Florida International University has implemented a new procedure for placing students into their first-year math courses. All incoming freshman students are required to take a math placement exam selected by the university. FIU has selected ALEKS, a powerful artificial-intelligence based program that assesses a student’s math proficiency and skill level. Students will take the ALEKS math placement test online by accessing the web address provided by FIU. The test is free of charge for all incoming students in Summer 2009 and Fall 2009. Students will be placed in the appropriate math course based on their score on the ALEKS placement test and intended major.
To allow for proper advising at Orientation, all entering freshman students MUST take the ALEKS math placement test before coming to Orientation. Students who have not taken the exam will not be allowed to register for a mathematics course.
To learn more about the ALEKS math placement test go to http://w3.fiu.edu/math/mathplacement.htm
Orientation Fees
There is a $35 fee for the student to attend orientation. The guest fee is $20. Your orientation fee is used to cover the costs of implementing the FIU orientation program. The fees cover the use of facilities, student and family member orientation publications, and meals for students and family members. Without your fee, the orientation program would not be possible. Please note that once you register yourself or any guests to attend an orientation, you are responsible for all charges.
If you have any specific questions regarding orientation, feel free to contact the Orientation Office via AIM screen name FIUOrientationUP Monday – Friday 10 am – 4 pm .
