2002 and earlierNutrition Education Improves Metabolic Outcomes among Older Adults with Diabetes Mellitus (2002). For professionals, this is a new intense, 10 session nutrition education program, with a food label focus, developed by researchers at Penn State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The program has been shown to help adults with diabetes age 65 and older improve their eating patterns and move toward meeting their treatment goals. Participants in the program changed their diets and had greater improvements in their blood sugar and cholesterol levels than people who were not counseled through the new approach.

HHS/NDEP Diabetes Prevention Campaign: Small Steps, Big Rewards.
For consumers,
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Diabetes Education Program are teaming up to spread the word that type 2 diabetes can be prevented in people at high risk. "Small Steps, Big Rewards" is a campaign and web site designed to get this important message to the 16 million Americans ages 40 to 74 (15.6% of the population) who have pre-diabetes, a condition that puts them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. This web site will keep you up to date on campaign activities. We will post mass media campaign materials and helpful lifestyle change tools and resources such as those on the DPP Program Study site for consumers and health care providers.
