EATING BETTER & MOVING MORE is a two-step program designed to improve nutrition and physical activity in older adults.

EATING BETTER focuses on improving eating habits. It uses the Guide (to be developed) that includes simple healthy recipes and tips to improve diets. The Guide's purpose is to introduce older adults to the Steps to Healthy Aging path, to encourage older adults to eat healthier and be more physically active, and to celebrate 30 years of the Older Americans Act Nutrition Programs.

MOVING MORE focuses on increasing physical activity. MOVING MORE is modeled after Colorado on the Move(TM), a statewide lifestyle initiative to improve health and prevent obesity through physical activity. Colorado's goal is to increase walking by 2000 steps per day or about a mile to stop the weight gain of the past decade. It uses step counters to inspire older adults to walk more. MOVING MORE aims to add steps throughout the day to achieve a step goal. It is designed to be FUN! A 2000 step per day increase, while easily achievable, may not be appropriate for all older adults. It is surprisingly easy and fun to increase walking using step counters. MOVING MORE can help older adults recognize the value of physical activity. Its success will be measured in increased steps and more positive attitudes toward exercise. MOVING MORE at any age enhances physical, emotional, and social well-being.

The National Policy and Resource Center on Nutrition and Aging at Florida International University encourages the Aging Network to use Steps to Healthy Aging: Eating Better and Moving More, including the program format, logo, brochure, Guidebook and other materials as they become available. Kindly give proper acknowledgement to the FIU Center and provide a complimentary copy of the final material to the Center upon publication. If you choose to modify the materials, please contact the FIU Center to discuss your proposed project and allow the Center to review materials prior to publication.
