FIU School of Music Placement Tests

Music Theory: All incoming music majors (freshmen, transfer, and graduate students) music take the Music Theory Placement Test.

Music History: All transfer students who have taken music history survey classes elsewhere that are transfer equivalents to FIU courses who wish to have those courses count toward their degree at FIU must take the Music History Placement Test. Music history at FIU is a four-course sequence, and therefore there are no course equivalents for students who have taken a comprehensive music history over a two-course sequence. FIU accepts music history transfer credits from other universities when there are matching course equivalents and on the condition that those students possess the same level of knowledge of music history as do FIU students who have completed the music history course sequence at FIU.  The placement test assesses this level. Since music history at FIU is an upper level course sequence, we cannot accept lower division credits from other universities since there are no state recognized equivalents.

Transfer students who have never taken music history do not need to take the placement test and must enroll in the music history sequence.

All incoming graduate students must also take the Music History Placement Test to determine if they have any deficiencies that need to be remedied by Graduate Music History Review Courses.
