The Cintas Fellowship Program is administered by the Cintas Foundation Board and the Cintas Fellowship Program at the Frost Art Museum at Florida International University.
Awarded since 1963, Cintas Fellowships acknowledge creative accomplishments and encourage excellence in architecture, literature, music composition and the visual arts to creative artists of Cuban lineage who are currently residing outside of Cuba. Past recipients include Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Oscar Hijuelos, multiple Obie-winning playwright María Irene Fornés, visual artists José Bedia and Teresita Fernández, photographers Andrés Serrano and María Martínez –Cañas. Other distinguished recipients include the late Felix Gonzalez-Torres, whose work will represent the United States at the 2007 Venice Biennale, architect and city planner Andres Duany, writer Cristina Garcia, sculptor Maria Elena Gonzalez, and composers Julián Orbón, Tania León and Orlando Jacinto García.
The Cintas Fellows Collection at the Frost Art Museum is comprised of works donated by past Cintas Fellows to the Collection. Over 250 objects, the largest collection of Cuban art works outside Cuba, comprise the Collection. These include paintings, prints, photographs, video, films, sculptures, musical compositions, literature, and architectural plans. Recent donations include works donated by photographers Luis Gispert and Anthony Goicolea, painter Christian Curiel, installation artist George Sanchez-Calderon, and filmmaker Amalia Zarranz. In addition to managing and maintaining the Collection, the Frost Art Museum hosts an exhibition featuring the Cintas Fellows every two years
The Cintas Foundation was established with funds from the estate of the late Oscar B. Cintas, former Cuban ambassador to the United States and a prominent industrialist and patron of the arts.
