The inaugural Miss Florida International University pageant was directed by Allison Choban. She had been involved with the Miss America Organization for several years and felt that
FIU should be represented at the Miss Florida Pageant. After Choban proposed the idea to FIU’s Student Government Association and they accepted, the first Miss FIU pageant was held in 2004. Merissa Amkraut was the first woman to hold the title of Miss FIU. Today she is the executive director of the Miss Gainesville pageant.

Meghan Alonge won the title the following year and placed 2nd runner up at the 2005 Miss Florida pageant. In early 2006 work began on revamping the Miss FIU Scholarship Pageant. Student Body President Marbely Hernandez made Miss FIU a top priority and took on the role of Executive Director. She also enlisted the help FIU staff member (and former pageant girl) Katie Mcgee to serve as advisor for the program. FIU’s Student Government Association generously provided funding for the pageant.

Under the direction of Hernandez, Mcgee and a committed pageant committee, the new
and improved Miss FIU pageant debuted after a two year absence on February 18, 2007.
The pageant was received with great enthusiasm and support by both the university and the student body. A year later, the 2008 production of Miss FIU was the biggest yet. A sold out crowd of 500 watched as a new Miss FIU was crowned on February 1, 2008.

In the past two years, the Miss FIU Scholarship Pageant has awarded hundreds of dollars in scholarships to contestants. Miss FIU titleholders have also had the opportunity to represent their university at the Miss Florida Scholarship Pageant (a direct preliminary to Miss America.)

The 2009 Miss FIU pageant is shaping up to be the best Miss FIU pageant yet. FIU’s Student Government Association has generously increased funding for the program and new sponsors are being added every day. For the first time, the pageant will be held at FIU’s on-campus 6,000 seat arena, FIU Arena. The 2009 Miss FIU Scholarship Pageant will take place in mid January.
