S. Giorgio in Velabro
This deaconry was erected ca. 590 by Pope St. Gregory I (590-604), in the ancient Forum Boarium, in the XI Region of Rome. The 7th Century basilica replaced an ancient oratory dating from the end of the 5th Century or the beginning of the 6th. It was in the XI Augustea Region (Augustea) or II Ecclesiastical Region of Velum aureum. According to Liber Pontificalis, Pope Zacharias (741-752) donated the head of St. George to this deaconry.

S. Lucia in Orphea or in Silice
The deaconry of S. Lucia in Silice (or in Orpha) is one of the seven original ones. It was confirmed by Pope St. Sylvester I ca. 314. The church was built ca. 630 by Pope Honorius I (625-638) in the vicinity of the monumental fountain lacus orphei. It was assigned to one of the seven deacons by Pope S. Agatho ca. 678. According to Liber Pontificalis, this deaconry received donations from Pope Leo III (795-816). It was situated in the III Roman Region, "Monti". After the 10th Century it was known as S. Lucia in Silice. The deaconry was suppressed in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V (1585-1590).

S. Lucia in Septisolio or Septizonio
According the Annuaire Pontifical Catholique the deaconry of S. Lucia in Septisolio, or in septem soliis, or in septem viis, was one of the 7 original ones. Liber Pontificalis indicates that this deaconry received donations from Pope Leo III (795-816). The church was built between the caput circus (circo Massimo) and the Septizonio, in the X Roman Region next to the Monastery of S. Gregorio al Clivo Scauro, at the foot of the Palatin in the angle of the Appian Way. Pope Sixtus V (1585-1590) suppressed it in 1587. Baronius, in his Annales, regrets the destruction of such a famous monument of Ancient Rome.

S. Maria Antiqua
This deaconry was probably established ca. 600 by Pope St. Gregory I the Great (590-604). Teodoto, primicerio defensorum and dispensatore of this deaconry, decorated the chapel of Ss. Quirico e Giulita. Pope Zacharias (741-752) appears in the painting with a square halo symbolizing that he was still alive. The church was built between the 5th and the 6th Centuries and occupied the atrium Minervae where the farewell diplomas of the Roman legionnaires were preserved. It was restored several times. The deaconry was located in the X Roman Region (Augustea). Pope Leo IV (847-855) transferred the deaconry to the church of S. Maria Nuova (later S. Francesca Romana) built by him near Via Sacra, because its physical condition had made the old church dangerous. In the consistory of January 14, 1664, Pope Alexander VII (1655-1667) transferred the cardinalitial deaconry to S. Maria della Scala.

S. Maria in Aquiro
This deaconry was assigned to deacons by Pope St. Agatho ca. 678. According to Liber Pontificalis, Pope Gregory II (715-731) changed into a basilica the small oratory of this deaconry and adorned it with paintings. The basilica was founded in the building of the temple of Matidia, in the IX Roman Region (Augustea). The deaconry was also known as S. Maria Acyro, or in Ciro. According to Cristofori, it was suppressed in 1540 by Pope Paul III (1534-1549) and restablished in 1565 by Pope Pius IV (1559-1565) but Eubel says that, according to Silvio Imperi in Della chiesa di S. Maria in Aquiro in Roma, Roma : B. Morini, 1866, this is erroneous.

The church was erected ca. 600 by St. Gregory I in the ancient temple of the Fortune (Templum Fortunae) in the X Region of Rome. It was also called in S. Maria in Schola Græca. Pope Stephen II (III) (752-757) established this deaconry. According to an original inscription, Duke Eustazio, who was its primicerio, donated funds to the deaconry. At the beginning, in the 6th Century, it was a small church built in the loggia dei mercanti. Later, it was transformed into a real basilica by Pope Adrian I (772-795). It was suppressed in 1432 by Pope Eugenius IV, who donated the church to the Benedictines of Monte Cassino to avoid the conflicts of jurisdiction between the cardinal deacon and the monks. Pope Leo X reestablished it in 1513.

(1) Chacón-Oldoini said that Cardinal Jacopo occupied this deaconry from ca. 1178 to 1179 and Cristofori, from 1180? to 1191 but Annuaire Pontifical Catholique indicates that Cardinal Orsini was its occupant for 47 years.

(4) Cristofori lists Gautier Gómez, psuedocardinal of Clement VII, as occupant of this deaconry from 1381 to 1382.

S. Maria in Domnica
This deaconry received various donations from Pope Leo III (795-816). Its basilica had been built in the proximity of the barracks of the 5th division of the Roman legion. The basilica was rebuilt by Pope Paschal I (817-820). The deaconry was located in the II Roman Region (Augustea). The deaconry was also know as La Navicella, in the square of that name in Mount Celio. It was also an archdeaconry until the time of Pope Gregory VII (1072-1085), who suppressed that dignity. The church was built over the place of the building where St. Ciriaco extended hospitality to persecuted Christians, and it is believed, with much verosimilitud, that the designation in Dominica is the translation into Latin of the Greek name Kyriaka. The church is also called S. Maria in Navicella, or only La Navicella because of a stone vessel, probably an ancient ex-voto that is found in the church. During the pontificate of Pope Benedict XIII (1724-1730), it was elevated to presbyteral title but later became again a deaconry. The current designation in Domnica is a contraction of in Dominica. It is not known when it began to be used.

S. Maria in Portico Octaviae
This deaconry was erected ca. 590 (or ca. 600) by Pope St. Gregory I the Great (590-604) near carcere Decemvirale. The church was in ruins and without revenues when Pope Alexander VII (1655-1667) suppressed it on June 26, 1662 and transferred it on the same day to the new church of S. Maria in Portico Campitelli.

Deaconry suppressed in 1662

(1) Cristofori lists Cardinals Gualone (1105?) and Domenico (?) (1133?) as occupants of this deaconry but Annual Pontifical Catholique indicates that this is erroneous.
(2) Annuaire Pontifical Catholique indicates that he could be the same person as his predecessor.
(3) Cristofori erroneously indicates that he became Pope Clement III. He also erroneously lists Cardinal Gregorio as occupant of the deaconry in 1159?.
(4) Vitae et res gestae Pontificum Romanorum et S.R.E. Cardinalium lists a Gualterio as cardinal deacon of S. Maria in Portico created by Innocent III. Hierarchia Catholica indicates that since Gualterio never subscribed as cardinal, it is doubtful that he was ever promoted.
(5) Cirstofori lists a Gregorio as occupant of this deaconry, between Cardinals Guala and Orsini, in 1146 (should be 1246). Hierarcha Catholica indicates that he should be eliminated from the list of occupants because there are no papal bulls subscribed by him.

S. Maria in Via Lata
This diaconal region must be the VII that was established ca. 250 by Pope St. Fabian (236-250). It was an oratory built in the ancient Pagan edifice called Septa Iulia. The oratory had paintings from the end of the 5th Century and the beginning of the 6th. In its place was built, ca. 700, the church of S. Maria in Via Lata, name of the ancient Roman street in which it was (currently in il Corso). Erected without a doubt a deaconry (the date is not known), it was not a regional deaconry but one of the four palatine deaconries, whose cardinals assisted the pope in the the liturgical celebrations. According to Liber Pontificalis, this deaconry received donations from Pope Leo III (795-816). It has had a collegial chapter of canons since 1144. It was for a long time the deaconry of the cardinal protodeacon.

Deaconry suppressed in 1661

(1) Cristofori says that he occupied this deaconry from 1088 to 1099. He also places a Cardinal Crescenzio as deacon of S. Maria Nuova from 1099 to 1119 but Annuaire Pontifical Catholique says that Cristofori confuses him with his namesake, the cardinal deacon of S. Maria in Domnica ca. 1112.
(2) Both Cristofori and Chacón indicate that Cardinal Regnier, from Borgogne, was the occupant of this deaconry in 1119 but Annuaire Pontifical Catholique says this is erroneous because the deaconry was occupied at that time by Cardinal Aymeric.
(3) Cristofori lists him as occupant from 1408 to 1431, indicating that he was a legitimate cardinal from 1409 to 1419. Hierarchia Catholica says that he died in 1413.
(4) Cristofori lists him as commendatario? from 1413 to 1431. Hierarchia Catholica indicates that he was deacon of S. Eustachio from 1413 to 1420.

S. Nicola in Carcere
This deaconry was erected by Pope St. Gregory III ca. 731. Immediately, it was assigned to the assistance of the incarcerated. Together with the deaconry of S. Maria in Portico, it was established to replace the deaconries of Ss. Nereo ed Achilleo, which had become a title; and S. Alessio (before the 10th Century, S. Bonifacio), which had been suppressed. According to Cristofori, the popular denomination of this deaconry as S. Nicola in Carcere Tulliano was erroneous. Carcere Tulliano is the same as Carcere Mamertina, and it was located at the foot of the Campidoglio. The basilica of this deaconry was erected next to Carcere Decemvirale. It was not a regional deaconry but it was reserved for a palatine deacon.

(1) Cristofori lists Cardinal Pagano (?) (1099-1115) as his successor but Annuaire Pontifical Catholique indicates that this is erroneous and that Cristofori probably confused him with Cardinal Pagano, deacon of S. Maria Nuova.
(2) Cristofori places Cardinal Ottaviano de Conti Tusculani as occupant of this deaconry from 1138 to 1145. Annuaire Pontifical Catholique indicates that he must be identified with Cardinal Ottaviano de Monticello because no one else mentions him, unless he is a different person and is placed as occupant from 1130 to 1133 during the exclusion of Cardinal Dauferio.
(3) Cristofori lists Cardinal Alessio (Egidio) as occupant of this deaconry from 1188 to 1190. Annuaire Pontifical Catholique indicates that Chacón and Mais-Latrie who also placed him as deacon of S. Nicola in Carcere, are mistaken and confused him with Cardinal Egidio Pierleoni.
