Birth. October 2, 1725, Lisbon, Portugal (1). Baptized, October 12, 1726. Of the Counts of Vale de Reis. Baptized on that same day.

Education. University of Coimbra, Coimbra (doctorate in canon law, June 23, 1748).

Priesthood. Ordained, October 5, 1755. Canon of the cathedral chapter of Lisbon. Principal primarius of the patriarchate of Lisbon. Royal chaplain. Reformator-rector of the University of Coimbra, October 25, 1779 to December 2, 1785.

Episcopate. Elected patriarch of Lisbon, March 10, 1788. Consecrated, November 16, 1788, Lisbon, by (no information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of April 7, 1788; never received the red hat and the title. Honorary member of the Royal Academy of Science. Counselor of state, July 4, 1796. Did not participate in the conclave of 1799-1800, which elected Pope Pius VII. During the first French occupation was obligated, like other bishops, to issue a pastoral letter favorable to the invaders.

Death. February 11, 1808, Lisbon. Exposed and buried in the patriarchal cathedral of Lisbon.

(1) Grande Enciclopédia Portuguesa e Brasileira, vol. 16, p. 907, indicates that he died on February 12, 1808, and that he was buried in the church of the convent of Graça.
