(32) 1. CAPECE ZURLO, Theat., Giuseppe Maria (1711-1801)

Birth. January 3, 1711, Monteroni, archdiocese of Bari. Of the noble family of the princes of Zurlo. Son of Prince Giacomo Capece Zurlo and Ippolita Sambiase, of the princes of Campana di Portanova.

Education. Entered the Congregation of the Clerics Regular Theatines; professed, January 6, 1727 (1). Received the diaconate, February 28, 1733. Studied philosophy and theology in Theatine houses of study, Rome.

Priesthood. Ordained, December 19, 1733. In his order, lector of philosophy, House Ss. Apostoli, for nine years; lector of theology; minister; consultor; vice-provost and lector of philosophy, House S. Silvestro, Rome; when he was going to be elected procurator general, 1756, the pope elected him bishop.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Calvi, May 24, 1756. Consecrated, May 27, 1756, Rome, by Cardinal Giuseppe Spinelli.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of December 16, 1782; received the red hat and the title of S. Bernardo alle Terme, February 17, 1783. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Naples, December 16, 1782. Decorated by King Ferdinando IV of Sicily with the grand cross of the Constantinian Order in 1783; and named knight and grand chevalier of of the Order of San gennaro in 1790. In 1799 tried to avoid the popular uprising encouraged by the reaction Sanfediste organized by Cardinal Fabrizio Dionigi Ruffo against the revolutionary army of French General Championnet. Did not participate in the conclave of 1799-1800, which elected Pope Pius VII.

Death. December 31, 1801, monastery of Monte Vergine, Naples. At his death, the cardinal was assisted by abbot general and ordinary Eugenio Maria Mauro da Palma and by his confessor Benedetto Jacenna. Exposed and buried in that monastery. Transferred to the metropolitan cathedral of Naples, June 26, 1806, the funeral took place on July 5, 1806. The funeral oration was delivered by Canon Gioacchino Puti. Buried in his family's chapel, dedicated to the Guardian Angel, in the Theatine church of S. Paolo, Naples (2).

Birth. January 20, 1715, Livorno. Patrician from Pisa.

Sacred orders. (No information found). Auditor general of the Apostolic Chamber.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal and reserved in pectore in the consistory of December 16, 1782; published in the consistory of December 17, 1787; received the red hat and the deaconry of S. Angelo in Pescheria, March 10, 1788. Opted for the deaconry of S. Agata in Suburra, March 30, 1789.

Death. October 11, 1793, Rome. Exposed in the church of S. Andrea delle Fratte, Rome, where the funeral took place, and buried in his deaconry.
