(9) 1. CALCAGNINI, Guido (1725-1807)

Birth. September 25, 1725, Ferrara. Of a noble family. Son of Palatine Count Cesare Calcagnini, 9th marquis of Fusignano, and Caterina degli Obizzi, marquioness of the Holy Roman Empire. Relative of Cardinal Carlo Leopoldo Calcagnini (1743).

Education. Collegio dei Nobili di S. Carlo, Modena, 1737; La Sapienza University, Rome (doctorate in theology and in utroque iure, both canon and civil law, May 15, 1747).

Early life. Privy chamberlain of His Holiness, 1746. Referendary of the Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace, 1749. Domestic prelate of His Holiness, 1749. Relator of the SS.CC. of Good Government and of the Ecclesiatical Immunity, 1751. Voter of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature of Justice. Canon and vicar capitular of S. Maria in Trastevere, Rome, 1756. Consistorial lawyer, 1758. Residential ambassador ad interim of Ferrara in Rome, 1758. Vote of the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature of Justice, 1759. Received the subdiaconate, November 11, 1764; diaconate, November 30, 1764.

Priesthood. Ordained, December 21, 1764.

Episcopate. Elected titular archbishop of Tarso, February 4, 1765. Consecrated, February 10, 1765, Rome, by Pope Clement XIII. Nuncio in Naples, February 22, 1765. Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, February 24, 1765. Prefect of the Papal Household, April 8, 1775.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of May 20, 1776; received the red hat and the title of S. Maria in Traspontina, July 15, 1776. Transferred to the see of Osimo e Cingoli, with personal title of archbishop, May 20, 1776. Participated in the conclave of 1799-1800, which elected Pope Pius VII.

Death. August 27, 1807, Osimo. Exposed and buried in the cathedral of Osimo.

Birth. May 29, 1725, Milan. Of the family of the Counts of Monza. Nephew of Cardinal Carlo Francesco Durini (1753).

Education. Collegio Romano, Rome; La Sapienza University, Rome (doctorate in utroque iure, both canon and civil law, June 9, 1757).

Early life. Referendary of the Supreme Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace. Internuncio in France. Inquisitor in Malta, 1759 for seven years.

Priesthood. Ordained, December 20, 1766.

Episcopate. Elected titular archbishop of Ancira, December 22, 1766. Consecrated, December 28, 1766, Rome, by Pope Clement XIII. Nuncio in Poland, January 16, 1767. First president and deputy of the legation of Avignon, January 22, 1774.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of May 20, 1776; never received the red hat and the title.

Death. April 28, 1796, in his villa near to Lake Como. Exposed and buried (no information found).
