CARVALHO DE MENDOÇA, Paulo de (1702-1770)

Birth. 1702, Lisbon, Portugal. Son of Manuel de Carvalho de Ataíde, "fidalgo de casa real" and Teresa Lumsa de Mendoça e Melo. Brother of Sebastião de Carvalho e Melo, marquis of Pombal, prime minister of Portugal (1756-1777) (1).

Sacred orders. Ordained (no information found). Monsenhor of the patriarchal cathedral of Lisbon. Commissary general of the Crusade. Secretary and supervisor of the house and estate of Queen Mariana Vitória of Portugal, wife of King D. José. President of the Council of the Holy Inquisition. Prior major of Guimarães. President of Chamber of the Senate of Lisbon by decree of September 19, 1764.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal and reserved in pectore in the consistory of December 18, 1769; he was published in the consistory of January 29, 1770; the news of his death on January 17, 1770 had not reached Rome.

Death. January 17, 1770, Lisbon. Exposed and buried in the patriarchal cathedral of Lisbon.
