Program Description

imageThe purpose of the FIU MBRS Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) Program is to enhance the research environment at FIU and increase the interest, skills, and competitiveness of students in pursuit of biomedical research careers. The goal of this program is to stimulate interest among under-represented minority students in continuing to a career in biomedical research and thereby increase the number of under-represented minority scientists engaged in biomedical research.

 

 

RISE Program BENEFITS

  • Compensation for work in biomedical research laboratory (Undergraduates: $10.50/hour; Graduates: $21,990/year)
  • Paid tuition for graduates ONLY (Fall and Spring 9 credits; Summer 6 credits)
  • Funding for domestic travel to scientific national meetings
  • Funding for scientific posters
  • Participation in special skills workshops (CPR, First Aid, Data Bases & Library Searches, Responsible Conduct of Research, etc.)
  • Use of MBRS RISE Resource Center
  • Use of MBRS laptops and projectors
  • Participation in Annual MBRS Mini-Symposium
  • Academic advising

 

Eligibility

  • US Citizen or Non-Citizen National or Permanent Resident
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Be enrolled full-time in baccalaureate, masters or doctoral degree programs in biomedical or behavioral science fields at FIU
  • Have a strong desire to pursue a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in the Biomedical Sciences
