Dr Mathee is an excellent professor and knows the material very well. She expects students to find out a lot of material that should presented in class.

2

Instructor needs to be more organized and assist students outside of class. Response to emails took very long time if response was given at all.Was difficult to keep up in class as there were no notes and she spoke too fast to ensure proper notes were made.Has good knowledge of course material. However, poor instruction skills. Future classes with this instructor will be avoided.

3

Class was good overall. But I recommend that the professor link the concepts together for the class.

4

Course content should be explained more clearly keeping in mind students from other disciplines who might not have the same background.

FALL 2007: PCB6025
1

A very good professor developing student interest in the subject. Tends to go a bit fast through the syllabus.

2
I found the subject matter very stimulating as well as the class topics. However, I found that the lectures were hard to follow at times. It seemed as if they were not organized in a way for me to easily follow and connect topics. I enjoyed the professor’s enthusiasm. I found her knowledge and attitude inspirational.
3

Dr. Mathee is a very knowledgeable instructor and a great lecturer. My only objection with regards to this course is that the exams given by Dr. Mathee were extremely long (class took on average 3.5 hours to complete it).

4
I found the course very educational and challenging. Dr. Mathee was very passionate about the material and thus captivated my attention.
5

I felt the course content was quite rigorous as were the exams. Part of this could be my lack of any recent exposure to the material. Overall both the profs. teaching style and expectations of her students helped me to get through everything with a much better understanding of prokaryotic mol. bio.

6

Very knowledgeable about material. Very hard professor but also quite helpful.

7

Great course!

8

The great disparity in the teaching and grading styles between the course professors has greatly increased the challenge in this course. Dr. Mathee perhaps unfairly treated all of her students as upper level PhD molecular biology majors. Her test style was that of PhD qualifying examinations for her personal students.

That being written, I appreciated the challenge although I think the grading was unfair.

9

Intellectually stimulating classes.  Probably the best graduate level exams that I’ve taken so far. She accentuates on thinking and applying what has been learnt which is vital for good courses. Excellent prof.

FALL 2005: PCB 6025 U01
1

It was difficult to switch instructors half-way through the semester. Your half should have been first. Most importantly, if there must be two instructors, they should both design tests that are much more similar. That way there is a chance for students to get used to certain formats and expectations. I would have probably done considerably better in the class if this were the case.

2
I hope your class as stimulating as ever!
3

Dr. Mathee’s section should have been 1st.  Liked the PowerPoint notes except lbr2 of them had no relevant chapters in the book. Not as horrible as everyone made you out to be except your tests are very challenging.

4

Dr. Mathee is an excellent professor. Her lectures are clear and well organized. Her exams are fair and cover only material she has covered in class. Very enthusiastic instructor.

5

Sometimes Dr. Mathee is difficult to understand. I did not like the two-teacher method. It is difficult on the students because once they get to know one style of teaching and tests everything gets changed. Also it does not give the student an opportunity to drop the class if they are not compatible with the second teacher’s style.

6

It would have been better if prokaryotes are dealt with before eukaryotes. It would enable us to under complex systems better.

7

This part of the class (Dr. K. Mathee’s) should go before Dr. Khun’s. Very good professor. I like the power point technique and the facilitation of the slides so we can attend and do not have to write all and loose our time.

FALL 2005: MCB 5315C U01
1

Someone should publish a textbook on cloning, it would have been more effective than reading our notes.

2

This class is not req’d for my major, but it will supplement my biomedical engineering background. Going into the class I didn’t know anything about cloning at all, including PCR, restricting enzymes, gels, etc. Now I have an understanding of the mechanisms behind these aspects and others in cloning. It was a short & thorough class.

3

Tough, challenging course. Learned a lot. Very applied to my research focus. Good flow of content; she is very knowledgeable and willing to help students outside of class. FIU needs more of tese courses to boost its grasp of Biomedical research in South Florida.

SPRING 2005: MCB 4934
1

Great class.

2

Important course for those interested in going to graduate school.  Relevant for learning how to write research papers.

SPRING 2005: MCB 4203
1

The class should be recommended for students perusing a carrier in medicine.  Important information was discussed in the class.  The tests give you an opportunity to score a good grade because of bonus questions.

2

This is one of the few biology classes where I feel I learned something.  Her exams are not multiple-choice or simple fill in the blanks.  She requires us to think and grasp the big picture.  She also makes the class interesting and fun.  She provides adequate lecture notes and gives no surprises.  I truly wish I could have her again in another course.

3

I learned a lot from this course, the professor presented the material in a very organized matter and this allowed a better understanding.  I had some trouble however in the test that was essay questions because the amount of material was large.  Thanks professor. I enjoyed your class very much, thanks for taking the time to read this.  You are an awesome disciplined person.

4

Should pass exams back sooner after taking them.  Like the fact that notes are available online for printing and studying.  Exams shouldn’t have too many essay-like questions.

5

I think it is a good idea to give extra points for extra detail since exams and quizzes are written, but I don’t think people should be penalized for answering the questions you ask.

6

Dr. Mathee, the apotheosis of an instructor, and professor.  Truly an inspiration for excellence.  Honor to have been part of you class.      Thank you.      XX-

7

I like the study groups.  They make practicing for the exams enjoyable.  I also appreciate a teacher that has high expectations of her students.

8

I had an excellent experience in this class.  It is the first time in FIU that exams have not been composed of multiple-choice.  It was a challenge but interesting on.

9

Great teacher. The course covers lots of material which I like.  However, the course covers so much material that 3 exams is just too little.  This class needs to have 4 exams covering less material as opposed to 3 carrying a whole lot more.  This class is well taught, medically relevant and a bonus should be given to the professor.  Excellent.

10

Excellent teacher!  I guess this is the most interesting course I have taken in n=my undergrad classes.

11

Very good overall.  My only real comment is that the powerpoint presentations had a lot of text on them, which means that students were split between reading and listening.  I think it would be better if the professor separated class notes for herself and we had lecture notes, but powerpoint was mainly visual.

12

It was a very interesting course.  There should be a lab for this class where the students can learn to identify the different bacteria etc.

13

It might be rather ticky-tac and I might just be a big baby.  Prof. Mathee has the ability to make a student (myself) feel like a complete moron w/comments retaining to additional information outside of class material.  She also lets the rest of the class know you’re an idiot also.  She does know her stuff anyhow.

14

This class is designed for a student which time is only on the school work.  (A lot memorization).  Adult student doesn’t have a chance.  A lot of material, short time.  You can study the material but if you.

15

I felt as if this course was geared more towards the students in her lab or students with previous extensive knowledge in this class.  It really isn’t a course for people just beginning to learn this subject.  It is not an introductory course.  I felt that too much was covered in this course so that the student wasn’t able to concentrate properly on each pathogen covered.

16

What I enjoyed most about this course is its content, which I found very interesting.  What set this class apart from others I’ve taken was its interesting subject matter.

17

Prof is very good.  She is willing to help students.  Her high expectations motivate study. I think a class on only toxins is a good idea.  I would like to see a class on dengue and malaria.

18

This was the most challenging class that I have ever taken at FIU.  Although I learned a great deal, there was just too much information to learn in one semester.

19

This course contains lots of information and needs to be expanded to 4 exams.  Also, one multiple choice exam wouldn’t be a bad idea.

20

I was working in the hospital and one of physicians logged on the internet and downloaded information on “Hemorrhagic bloody diarrhea”.  As soon as I heard the name I said “ That sounds like Ebola.” The doctor said “you are right” and coworker present were surprised that I knew the material.  Therefore, your class is very relevant to my profession (nursing).  Thanks for teaching.

21

Overall, Dr. Mathee is an excellent professor and I would take a class with her again.  This course has an overwhelming workload, but I really enjoyed it, learned a lot and relate the information to medical studies and reports.  This is one of the few classes taken at FIU that I can honestly say I learned something from.  However, I didn’t like the manner in which she approached me and encouraged me to drop her course.  I feel that a teacher should encourage their students vs. discouraging them.

SPRING 2005: PCB 3063
1

Dr. Kalai is an excellent as well as skilled professor. She knows the material in full & she’s always encouraging the students to learn &aim for success at all cost. I have nothing derogatory to say about her because she’s awesome.  Keep up the good work Professor Mathee!

2

I felt this professor was fair in exams and as an overall teacher. However, her way of lecturing made her almost unapproachable. She was a fair instructor and gave more than enough resources to help students. But I felt like she came off too strict.

3

I enjoyed the class a lot. It was very informative. My only concern is that some confusing material was covered too fast and really did not stick.

4

This class was very valuable to my education. I enjoyed the way in which Prof. Mathee taught the course and I took all of her advice very seriously. I believe Prof. Mathee is an excellent teacher and mentor and I am honored to have sat in her class. Her lectures helped me achieve new levels of understanding. One recommendation that I have for Prof. Mathee is that she proof-read the exams, because some of the ques. were unclear and confusing. Sometimes there were grammar errors that were misleading.

5

Very appreciative of informing of students about campus events and scholarship opportunities. Enjoy instructor’s enthusiasm/interest in subject and recommendations of related readings/references.

6

This class is very challenging, but also very enjoyable. The teacher makes the class very interesting as well as very educational. The tests are the hardest part (of course) and sometimes seem a little hard to pass, but with enough study time as well as effort, it is possible to pass the exams. The class overall is interesting not only b/c of the subject matter but mainly b/c the teacher makes the class lectures interesting w/ up to date information on scientists, current events and also providing us w/ information on research opportunities at universities across the country. I just feel that as much as this class has been challenging, it has also been one to enjoy, If this class is still taught this way, it is very pleasing as well as educational.

7

This class was very interesting, but I fill the instructor needed to be more enthusiastic, throughout the entire semester. This way students would not loose interest.

8

I found the course to be reasonable with sufficient stimulation from the professor about the course content. I have no complaints. You are a very good teacher.

9

I am actually disappointed about one thing – my personal performance in the class. I genuinely enjoyed the class. I learned a lot. This is one of the class where I actually opened my book read because I wanted to. Dr. Mathee is good professor, she can be tough sometimes, but sometimes it is necessary.

10

Powerpoint presentation is very helpful. Explanations in class are very good. Easy to understand. The only distractions are when the professor talks about other things for a while.

11

The teacher expected too much of us. She crammed a lot of information in very little time, therefore when the exam came there was so much information to learn that some of the information was impossible to cover properly. The teacher did not curve & this affected the class as a whole. When she explains concepts in class it is not explained well enough. In other words going to class does not help me because if I read the book it will say, almost word for word exactly what she says in class.

12

Overall a good professor. What I appreciated from the class was the outline of what was expected from us in the beginning of the lecture. I was surprised we deviated from the outline – chapters more than one occasion.

13

The traditional genetics felt a little too long, liked the pace of the class, tests could be a bit more challenging in details and reasoning, didn’t like the large amount of time spent on null hypotheses and scientist names.

14

I understand that this is a difficult course, but I feel that the course content could have been outlined a little more clearly and important information could have been emphasized better during lectures as a means to guide students through the information with more direction. I felt that the exams were somewhat fair, but that the quizzes were too difficult and asked for too much memorization.

15

For one who wasn’t very interested in Genetics, this class really motivated me and others in the class. Dr. Mathee really cares; and it shows by how she updates the syllabus, sets up study groups, and even how she excuses students for not showing up no matter how well they are doing. And a comment on this comment sheet: please increase the spacing.

16

Professor Mathee did not follow the syllabus very well. And most of the time it seemed like she wasn’t teaching at an appropriate pace. It seemed like she was trying to cram too much information before the test, She called students names out loud in front of a class of over 100 others telling them to meet her after class, indicating that they did not do well on her exam, In other words humiliating them, which is very unprofessional. Although I didn’t enjoy my time in this class she did show interest in her lecture material.

17

I thought the lectures were very boring, and there was very little class interaction. I also thought there was too much information between quizzes, One way I feel that Dr. Mathee can improve is to not rely so much on her power point presentation and to get the class involved a little more. Quizzes every week or every two weeks would also be a way to improve the course.

18

I found the course extremely challenging, but the instructor stimulated me to become interested in the course content. I felt very intimidated by her teaching style and did not feel comfortable approaching her as a mentor. She needs to work on her respect for students, and her concern for others. However, she really was an effective instructor because I thoroughly learned the course content.

19

I feel that the instructor’s knowledge of material was exceptional yet the ability to bring the class to her level was not at its best.

20

The professor goes through lectures too quickly. Her quizzes are impossible. She expects too much from her students. The grammar on the tests makes tests difficult. Does not explain well enough. Her accent makes it difficult for me to understand lectures.

21

Dr. Mathee is a complete professor that knows how to teach class, and get the attention of her students. This class of genetics is not easy to understand but she gives it in a way that we feel interested to learn more. Also, her personality gives us space to talk to her and tell her what we don’t know.

22

Perhaps it would be better if you give more quizzes, covering less chapters; some of the quizzes seemed more like exams because of the vast range of things that could have been asked, especially in the second quiz. The material is v. interesting & so is the book!

23

The instructor did at very good explaining complex topics & stimulating interest in class. Her tests required more than simple memorization; they required critical thinking. I learned a lot from her, She was also always willing to answer questions of things related to genetics but that we hadn’t studied in class.

24

Her tests are confusing. Unnecessarily difficult. She is unclear on what she expects. Her quizzes are also unfair & to detailed.

25

Exams are too tricky. The material is not tricky, but the wording is. I would study a lot for the exams but the questions asked would occasionally make my studying seem worthless.

26

I think she was a great professor. I would prefer if she would give quizzes at the end of the class though.

27

After taking this course I am truly more interested in genetics. However I do wish that we could have done more in class discussion and work on some of the problems in the book esp. in the middle of the course. I have found myself learning more after the exams than before them.

28

Instructor made class interesting by providing examples and interesting comments.

29

The professor encourages me to learn. Her class compared to my other classes really requires more studying so it is accomplish to get a good grade in her class. But overall she is a good professor.

30

The teacher is very energetic. She is very concerned that the students will pay attention and learn.

31

There’s so much information that comes with Genetics that its difficult for a student to retain but Dr. Mathee did a good job with the power point presentations, and quizzes are always a reason to keep studying throughout the semester.

32

I found her to be a good instructor and she really expected a lot out of her students. She really kept me on my toes and showed a lot of interest in the material and in the performance of the class. While she explained her ideas fairly well I do believe that she moved on a little too fast, for my taste at least. Overall she is a great instructor.

33

Ms. Mathee I think is a great researcher and maybe has a great lab. However I don’t think that her strongest characterizes(?) is teaching. With all the respect that she deserves. I have never had such a horrible teacher, first getting to understand what she means is a mission. She speaks really fast and sometimes one thing has nothing to do with the other, We are not a graduate class, and even though I know that pretty much the book has to be my best friend, I pretty much taught myself, Ms. Mathee was not that necessary for my learning. I think that after this is said I have to highlight that she improve her explaining skills a little bit towards the end of the semester.

34

Too many mistakes on exams and quizzes!!!

35

You are a very interesting professor because you are concern w/ours question. I’m very happy of having you for teacher.

36

Good expression of what is important; however, these are bit always on the test; and the level and propagation of information on exams lack any consistency.

37

I think she stimulates the learning environment very well by expecting us to participate in extracurricular activities, as well as, inside the class.

38

Professor Mathee has charisma, personality, and a sense of humor. However, she fails to hand back scores of tests and quizzes in a timely fashion. There is no review or emphasis on any particular topic before an exam. Therefore questions on her test sometimes include pieces of information that were casually mentioned once. She has succeeded in making an introduction and undergraduate Genetics course Arduous and difficult.

39

You are one of the best professors I have had at FIU, I wish I had you for my other classes. You went a little bit too fast on some chapters, 6,7,8,10.

40

I enjoyed coming to your class, I looked forward to it every class period. However, the very first day was made very intimidating and gave the wrong impression of what this course was all about. I was unsure on whether or not to take your course after the first day because you made it seem like you were going to purposely make it very hard for us.

41

That wasn’t the case and the class ended up being very enjoyable. Your should relax a little on your first lecture.

42

The first few days of class were exciting, having a professor who was so blunt about her expectations and her desire for our success both in this class as well as in the school’s bio program. And Dr. Mathee obviously displayed her knowledge of the course material, and refreshingly, her focus on the history of the field. The only thing that detracted from the class  were silly mistakes made in basic lecture topics, and exam grading. A good foundation and a fresh start. All that’s needed is a bit of polishing. Thank you for a great semester.

43

Genetics was an unexpected experience with professor Mathee. Her way of teaching is very different and varied from others professors that actually focus on some subjects more than others. I think if she were to focus on more important stuff we would actually learn more and not have to memorize unnecessary material every time there is an exam. I think she is a great professor and a very caring one also. She seems to love what she does and I like that.

44

Mrs. Mathee seems to always be ready for the lecture with the use of  power point but she goes extremely fast without making the information any easier to comprehend, Her exams are fair except that many times the questions that are asked are not very clear as to what she is looking for.

45

Give more bonus points on tests, and extra credits.

46

I enjoyed this class very much, I thought that the style of teaching was fresh, and that the instructor truly wanted the class to succeed. Making it easier to want to study and get good grades.

47

It would be nice if review sheets would be given before each test.

48

Dr. Mathee is very good professor who knows the material very well. I feel like I learned a lot of useful information in this course that I will apply in the future. This course was different from others I have taken at FIU b/c the information I learned was interesting enough for me to want to share with my friends and family.

49

The exams should be returned to the students so they can keep them as a feedback of their performance and for future references to study for other exams.

50

Having the notes ahead of time is very helpful in class while the lecture is being given, the class is very interesting and you made it funny a lot of the time.

51

The professor needs to work on her grammar skills! Her exams are very difficult to understand because of this. When questions are asked, no real responses as I would expect.

52

Professor Mathee shows intense interest in her work and also is full of information in genetics. She knows her material well.

53

Dr. Mathee is one of the few professors that I have had that really shows concern for her students and is interested in the education of her students above all things. Her concern and high expectations for us has motivated me to learn the material and had stimulated an interest in the subject. She tries to reach out to her students not only on an educational level but also as a friend.

54

The best patient instructor I’ve had!

55

Very smart professor. Really shows care for us. Very funny. Very unique. Made me work my butt (use another word) off!

56

Excellent teacher. Interested in knowing students learn the material.

57

ON the second exam I took the form A, question 27 I found it very offensive because it referred to why does DNA binds to the histone protein or something like that and one of the options was: “because God made it that way”, obviously that was not the right answer for you…I believe in creation and I took that option very offensive. I hope you can correct that because there is no point for that statement. Thank you!

58

The information given in the class is a very large amount of information that needs to be studied, understood, and memorized if the student wants to get the best grade possible, so I think that it is better if the information is given not so fast, not in power point present., but explained by the teacher in a simple way.

59

The information given in the class is a very large amount of information that needs to be studied, understood, and memorized if the student wants to get the best grade possible, so I think that it is better if the information is given not so fast, not in power point present., but explained by the teacher in a simple way.

60

She did a good job. Very fair & expressed ideas vividly. Taught the concepts well too.

61

I believe that sometimes your attitude could be very offputing to students. Many times it felt as if this class was more of a high school class in regards to the method of learning the information and that there was little attempt to introduce material in varying ways to ensure that all students could find a way to relate to the information.

62

This course is required for my program. Dr. Mathee is very knowledgeable and sometimes this carries over into her lectures. I feel that the lectures were rushed in an effort to meet the syllabus. In the future I would recommend that a conscious effort is made by the instructor to not speed through difficult chapters. Possibly utilizing more visual aides to explain certain topics as opposed to verbalizing everything.

FALL 2004: PCB 6025
1

Dr. Mathee is very knowledgeable about the subject and covers all major topics. There is an in congruency between the level of detail-required examinations and the depth the corresponding material is covered during lectures. The class should be more about major concepts and less about memorization of individual players of the system

2

Energetic. Caring. Gets to know every name immediately. She has a great respect for those that did what she does – and passes it on.

3

Professor should consider the various backgrounds of her students when presenting and explaining material(s) for the course. Professor should list extra resources prior to student as preparation source for the courses.

4

Great teacher. The ambiguity of the tests could be lessened.

5

The grading system was a bit confusing. There should be a set standard for grading in this course.

6

I have never studied so much for a class (everyday for hours) without any positive results. I was always in fear of losing my TA ship. The tests were confusing and not always in conjunction with all of the material in the book or class.

7

Relate the topics to current hot research, thus stimulating interest.

8

No so many specifics in the exams. English accent need to be improved

9

Tough at first, seemed to expect a lot, however a very fair grader in the end. I think this made us challenge ourselves and push to learn more. Well-taught course.

10

The course is good and appropriate. However the instructor is horrible. She has absolutely no respect for students. She does not care about their concerns and is extremely rude during the class as well as during office hours. She has no professionalism and often makes sexually related remarks during the lecture. She has no place in a university setting. She is offensive and is a discredit to FIU.

11

The exams were very harsh and in some extent not consistent with other quizzes. The course load was too much to cover in a short period.

12

Very difficult to learn from this professor. Hard to obtain information from. Hard to talk to. Hard to approach. Very discouraging to serious students. Extremely frustrating and unfulfilling educational experience. Careless in presentation of material. Un-conscientious. Unhelpful. No feedback.

13

I wish if she doesn’t give so much importance to the minutest detail. It would be nice to assess the overall understanding of the concepts.

14

I know many students did not like her as a professor, mainly because she was so detail-oriented. But, I truly thought she was awesome – she kept me on my toes as far as studying and really knowing the information.

15

Dr. Mathee stressed quantity rather than quality. I believe she should aim for covering less material w/more emphasis on the material she can get to. I enjoyed her enthusiasm and I felt that she was tough but fair.

16

I’d like more assignments or more frequent quizzes so that we get more feedback. Also, if the exams were scheduled for Tuesdays instead of Thursdays, it would help a lot. Like the study group e-mailing system to let students know when others are getting together.

17

Dr. Mathee seemed to have very structured lectures but this hindered the learning process because she never had time to answer questions. Furthermore, she seemed almost annoyed or defensive when questioned by a student.

18

She went too fast during some of the lectures. It would be nice if she slowed down and explained some of the important concepts more thoroughly.

19

Training attempt is a failure because:

  • Too many topics/ too many case studies/ too much detail.
  • Instructor talks too fast to cover topics in class.
  • Not all students in class have equal background
  • Results in unfair grading
  • Suggestion: Open book exam
  • Eng students do not have any knowledge or practical experimental experience involved in course topic – major handicap.
20

The instructor does not have an organize way to develop the class. She also does not help students to improve when they approach their lectures are very confusing and unorganized. There are no homework or projects to help students get actual training prior to exams and quizzes.

21

I feel that her expectations for the class to engulf the amount of detail she demanded in our grading was far fetched. At the level we are currently in, a firm grasp of the material should suffice for a hard earned grade. The amount of insecurity caused by this situation where correct answers were not given appropriate credit is not conducive to learning the material.

22

You (Dr. Mathee) need to look more objectively at your test questions. For example, have a colleague review them because some of your questions are biased. The bias comes from the fact that you are writing the questions and not attempting to look at it objectively from the student’s prospective. For example, calling the control dogma “invalid” and continuing to call the antisense RNA, a protein in your quorum sensing experiment questions (last exam). Lastly, I think it would only be fair to require the undergraduate book that you are reading from. I hope these criticisms are understood to be constructive. Thanks for a good class!

23

Dr. Mathee expects all students in the class to know every last detail about the subject area. As a biomedical student with absolutely no background in the area it is unfair for her exams and grading schemes to be the same as PhD and Maters biology and microbiology students. Over all she is OK as a professor. But course need more work to be done.

FALL 2004: BSC 5936
1

Excellent speaker (Refering to Palumbi). Dr. Mathee’s contribution to the preparation of all activity was great.

2

I enjoyed the Glaser seminar very well. I learned a lot from the guest speaker Dr. Stephen Palumbi and the interdisciplinary field.

3

Excellent! Wish we had these more than just once a year!

4

Excellent speaker! Mathee made it easier to get to know the speaker. Well Done!

5

Very stimulating experience, student presentations were professional and extremely impressive.

6

Go back to doing Science Paper Reviews!

FALL 2004: BSC 4934
1

Great instructor. Lots of Help (Research). Thesis write-up, etc…Students presentations are professional and impressive.

2

Taking this class gave me the opportunity of learning about the different topics and also great training in how to write a professional thesis. I would recommend this class to other students.

3

Dr. Mathee has been a teacher.

SPRING 2004: MCB 5315C - 01 CLONING WORKSHOP
1

The course provided a lot of tools for independent learning and experiment preparation.  I feel it should be required for any graduate student who will be using these techniques in their lab.

2

Course is very packed with content probably too much towards the end but all has taught me more about cloning.  It would maybe be better if the assignments were more spread out amongst the weeks instructor has taught me a lot and she is always willing to help.

3

It would help immensely to have prepared power point slides for the lecture portion of the class.  The lab portion was intensive and complete and made sure that we all understand the concepts.

4

She is a very good instructor, very knowledgeable about the subject & full of excellent tricks of the trade on the various techniques.  My only suggestion to improve the course is to provide either an electronic or paper copy database of protocols, and software to help us as reference tools during our assignments.  I highly recommend her workshop.

5

You have too many assignments at the end of the term.  Make them spread out.  Presentations are good to present papers.  Virtual cloning is good to have us understand cloning but don’t leave till end.

6

Great course!  However, I think there were a few too many assignments for a 2-credit class.

7

I think Dr. Mathee did a good job; I learned a lot in this course.

SPRING 2004: PCB 3063 - 01 UNDERGRADUATE GENETICS
1

Dr. Mathee is a fair professor.  She makes sure we keep track of the material knowing its complexity by implementing several quizzes.  I believe that genetics itself is a hard course but she tried her best to present it as simple as possible.

2
I liked the fact that it was very clear what we needed to know & if we learned that we ‘d get a good grade.  Having the p-point on the web was also very useful.  I liked the concern Prof Mathee had for the class- not only in her class but also regarding choice of professions etc.  That’s about it.  Thanks for a great course.
3

Dr. Mathee is extremely knowledgeable in her field.  Her online resources are excellent.  However, there are no sample tests, or other material which can be used as a practice tests, were these available online or in the library, it would be helpful.

4

The downloadable presentations were excellent.  Many other lectures are done in power point, but are not available to students.

5

I truly enjoyed Professor Mathee’s approach to the class and to the subject matter.  Two aspects are noteworthy.  The first is her encouragement to seek knowledge regarding genetics outside of the classroom, especially by motivation to read from a list of contemporary science books.  The other is her talk of possible positions within the field and steps that could be taken at an undergraduate level such as research grants & lab positions.  If possible, I look forward to another semester with Prof. Mathee.

6

It was a good class.  More involved than others.  I learned something!!

7

This was an excellent class; the method of teaching of the professor is very practical especially for students that like myself have to work & study at the same time.  It is very helpful to have the lectures available on the web.  At the same time she made the class lectures very complementary to the web lecture.  There is no way a student could have good grades w/out coming to class.  Very intelligent of her.  She created a very nice and relaxing atmosphere during classes so students including me, felt very comfortable.  The material of the class was explained clearly.  I enjoyed the class.

8

A fantastic professor and a great course!  The course increased interests in genetics by 100%.  The professor, however, made a big difference.
What makes this class different is the actual teaching method.  When you have someone who actually knows the knowledge and knows how to translate it so that students can understand, then you will get better results.  I signed up for this class because I was in another class that Mathee taught and I loved it.  I wish more teachers would provide their notes online and give quizzes so that we could be caught up with information.  Great personality also!  Always smiles!

9

It’s great that the notes are online and how they follow the book so closely.

10

I liked that the powerpoint files were online.  It helped me to know what to read from the book and allowed me to review the lectures more effectively.  It was a good class and I was inspired, by it.

11

The reason why I enjoyed the course thoroughly was b/c, she actually allowed us to focus & see the material she spoke about.  She inspired us to learn for learning sake and in the process I feel as many of us succeeded.  The 1st course @ FIU where I’m taking a lot of the course material.

12

She is a very knowledgeable, caring professor.  2 thumbs up!!  The fact that the class notes are on the internet allows for easy recall of information learned in class.  Tape recording the lectures and playing them while looking at the website allows for the student to grasp concepts expressed during lectures that were missed the first time around.  This is what I liked most about her teaching style.

13

I hate to say it, but the quizzes help.  The material for this course is interesting & the professor’s emphasis on telling us about the history (ie. discoveries) that led up to what we know today really sparked my interest in genetics and research.  Thank you!  Have a good summer!

14

Absolutely a great instructor!!!  Very organized.  She motivates you!!!  Here in FIU we don’t have too much professors like her.

15

Public class comment.  Public comment – system lout “It would be nice to see more biotechnology” + “And the role of computer science in” + “modern genetic research”);

16

I really learned genetics unlike most people that took Genetics with other professors at this university.
The quizzes were def. something to study for but I liked how they prepped us for the test.  Without the quizzes, I don’t think I would have done as well in the class.  Hopefully the next class can have some more extra credit…the tests warranted more credit or at least some more cause to perform since the tests were pretty hard.

17

Only problem with course was that content (which should be already learned in previous biology courses) at beginning of semester was at a steady, but too slow of pace.  The much more difficult and detailed material (and perhaps the most important information) towards the end of the semester was literally rushed through, and shoved into a single final exam.  It would definitely be much more helpful to even out the pace of teaching material, or at least to give more time to more difficult material.

18

Quite challenging, this course is a great introduction for students interested in continuing with the study of Genetics.

19

I think it would be best to have an exam in between Exam II and Exam III (which is the final).  There is a lot of information all for one exam.

20

What I liked about this class is the high amount of resources provided by the instructor that we can use in order to study.  Also, I liked the fact that the instructor helped us to see how all the information we learned could be applied to many different careers.

21

This class was different in one particular way, Prof. Mathee actually spent a lot of time on designing the powerpoints she used.  They were very informative.  I would suggest that she puts her grading scale and the worth (%) for each quiz, test out of our total grade, in her syllabus.  GENETICS ROCKS!!

22

Dr. Mathee is an excellent Professor.  I feel that this course has given me a strong foundation in genetics that is required for graduate level courses in Biology.  She was very approachable and indeed took time to advise me on taking courses to strengthen my background in biochemistry.

23

Quizzes are harder than tests.

24

OK.  In consideration, periodic quizzes are good to keep students up to date with material.  Agree with the fact that the simple genetics like Mendel’s ratios, composition and structure of DNA, etc. were covered well in Biology I; more time could be allotted for more in-depth genetics.
P.S. – Powerpoint slides can utilize default schemas with dark boxes & light text that print light boxes and dart text to save ink/toner for people who print lectures.

25

What thing different about the course that I like was the power point presentation of the lectures.  They were very colorful, very informative, and very helpful for understanding the concepts.  I enjoyed the power point presentations.

26

Shows great enthusiasm on the subject, and knows and explains it very well.  Very approachable and willing to help outside class.  Very organized – slides, e-mailing students.

27

More time w/ replication, transcription & translocation rather than rushing it the 2nd half of the course.  Power point presentations keep them.

28

**Needs to keep office hours and attend to students at that time, especially needs to be in office during those hours.  If not going to be available one week should notify students and reschedule for another day & time.  Keep up the quizzes they do help the students out even if they don’t want to admit to it.  You are a very busy woman try not to do so much so you can be less stressed out.  Try not to appear so unavailable to students and respect that they require some of your time (office hours and allow for extra scheduled time).  If you show your students that you care & will give them time they will respect you more and honor you.

29

Very good overall.  I liked the fact that there were class goals & if you did the assignments, you did well.  It was a shame, that little advanced Genetics was covered – the first chapters were pretty easy & we spent too much time on them.  It was clear Prof. Mathee wanted students to succeed & wanted to make different career options etc. known.  I liked the book – shame it’s not hardcover.  Liked the quizzes to keep us on top of work.

30

Too many quizzes.  Too much emphasis on being “on time”.  Too many distracting students in class (got professor water one day for no reason, unprompted).  Teacher seems sex-biased: prefers men.  On the plus side -> she knows genetics and wants students ultimately to do well.  Also – fewer personal comments in class (Regarding her family situation).  Her lecturing, ability to explain material, needs work.

31

The beginning of the course is at a moderated pace but towards the end it is too rushed even though the material is harder.  The instructor is also hard to reach sometimes and seems too busy to attend students outside of class.

32

Mathee is a good professor for graduates, she’s not yet able to really teach undergrads b/c she’s soused to graduated; her grade scale should have been in her syllabus.
Dr. Mathee is extremely knowledgeable in her field, and always willing to answer questions in class.  I learned a great deal everyday.  Her quizzes and tests however cover so much material that studying becomes extremely frustrating.  The level of detail in this course is intense.

33

Dr. Mathee is an original & genuine professor.  Her professionalism is superb!  I think she knows her subject matter and enjoys teaching it.  She facilitates learning not just from a classroom aspect but from that of life.

FALL 2003: PCB 6025 - 01 MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY I
CO-TAUGHT WITH DR. DAVID KUHN
1

I believe graduate students should know a bit about everything.  Personally it has helped me a lot; because this is my area of study.  The class is very competitive and challenging, it goes beyond theory and holds us to apply what we’ve learned.

2

It was a learning experience, with good understanding developed in MCB1

3

This class was challenging because of the variety of question types on quizzes.  Some were definitions which challenged me to explain the relationships, others were just repeating things I had memorized.  I felt like the quizzes weekly were helpful in keeping up on the material.  A lot of the material was confusing without having read the first.  More emphasis should be placed on preparation for lectures to make class more effective.

4

It’s a good course, very demanding in terms of study time, but I think it’s worth it taking it because we learn a lot.  I think it should include maybe in another part of the course (another semester) a comparison of molecular mechanisms between prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.

5

Having more time to try to comprehend the topics was great.  The class however was still very fast pace.  Perhaps meeting 3 days a week instead of 2 would help with retaining the information.  A big challenge for me was remembering what I just learned & learning new concepts every week.

6

The lecture is great.  For me I learn a lot of things in this class.  But I feel the time for this class is too limited.  I hope the lecture to have more credit hours.  Instructor is well qualified, so in general I’m satisfied with the class.

7

The extra points were a disadvantage for those that didn’t have a grasp of the subject matter.  The ones who already knew just managed to get further ahead.  Every problem should be worth a certain # of pts & we shouldn’t be compared to other students answers.

8

Dr. Mathee is very energetic & knowledgeable in her field of study.  This course was very fast passed & not targeted toward students that lack some background.  Many changes were made throughout the semester with very little notice to students.  Class lectures & syllabus were not consistent or available as the semester progressed.

9

She should base her classes more on the textbook, at least try to use the figures from the book.  It’s a good course, interesting topics, but it is too much information to be teached in just an hour and 15 minutes.

10

Positive - the instructor seems to have a good command of field and overall this class has been a valuable experience.
Negative - the information is presented in an overwhelming manner.  The instructor should help the students to weed through the information more quickly and provide more (activities/exercises) to help prepare for exams.

11

This course provided a very good insight into genetic engineering.  It helped in understanding the language & terminology.  Dr. Kalai Mathee helped a great extent in understanding the basic concepts really well.  She has a great concern for students.  I found this class covered a vast amount of information in a short period of time, so although it was very interesting it was difficult to follow.  I think my lack of background information in the subject was my short-falling, and had I taken an undergraduate genetics class, I would have been better prepared.  All in all, I learned a lot, and the set-up of the lectures was good.  The fact that lectures were on PPT presentations available on the website was very helpful.

12

Dr. Mathee’s grading policy completely allows her to manipulate the grades of the students.  The values of the questions are inconsistent, and the bonus points only add to the possible variation.  When the possibility arises that a grade of C is given to a value of nearly 100% something is wrong.  I am currently getting a good grade in her portion, and I still have many problems with her grading and teaching style.  So, not only was she present during an evaluation, she also saw the evaluations before they were given to the office to be typed up.  This is THE MOST unethical occurrence I have ever seen or heard of.  Most professors would have no issue with bad evaluations, but Dr. Mathee has a history of seeking revenge for ill feelings toward her.  She is a very dangerous professor, person, and scientist.  SHE SHOULD BE INTERROGATED.

13

Professional presentation slides are excellent, fair grading instructor very extremely knowledgeable.  Classes are never long except when they took 2 hours.  However classes were extended to 2-hour classes 4 times to compensate for a missing class students opinions are not taken under consideration.  Voice too loud and aggressive, alienates students, dictatorial decision-making.

14

This class has taught me to think and learn like a graduate student.  The level of work and information required extra hours and extra effort that was at times very difficult but was worthwhile when the results were received.

15

I believe she has a lot to learn about respect for the students, she is not fair at all and has problems with her grading.

16

An overall fair teacher, got behind on the syllabus and sometimes rushed to get through it all.  Tests and exams were fair and kept you thinking.

17

The class was hard work but because of the many quizzes it made me keep up with the hard work and not fall behind.  Much of the content I had already learnt in an easier way in undergrad but it was nice to build on this work.  The tests were fair, there were no surprises and as long as you revised you could do fine.  Overall a fair class that was well taught.

18

As a first year graduate student this class made me realize what it takes to be successful- unfortunately I may have realized it too late to get a good grade.  Even though this class is very difficult I have learned more (even with a bad grade) than any class I’ve ever had before.  Dr. Mathee is VERY fair in her teaching and grading methods and obviously wants students to learn.  It still is hard to follow and if the notes were presented more organized (before class availability) it would be better.  But it is a good class.

19

Great teacher.  Showed great deal of interest in students learning in the course.  Presentations of material was clear as were expectations exams and quizzes consisted of materials covered in class.  Really made the material interesting and made me want to learn if only to let her know her dedication was not wasted.

20

She doesn’t know the subjects (she taught us wrong more than three times) and she is unfair with different students.  Plus she gave us during the last exam this form to be completed and we wrote our evaluations down and she collected them and took to her office.  So, she could compare the letter from evaluation with the letter from the exam.

21

As an undergraduate I only had genetics & microbiology.  My genetics class was a joke and I only learned mitosis.  So, 90% of the material in this class is new to me.  You assume that everyone has a background in this and thus I have to work very hard to understand the material.  So I work harder but you have an excellent understanding of the material & you explain it well, just too fast.  Your tests are fair, & your quizzes are okay but random.  I have learned a lot in your class.

22

It is a good course, it has a lot of good topics.  I liked that the PowerPoint lectures are online, is easier to understand everything if you can pay attention instead of writing everything.  I think sometimes there is need of more reference books or papers.

23

I like the way the quizzes and the exams are corrected (the extra points) but the quantity of material to study is too much.  Plus, I would like to have more time to take the quizzes.  The time for the exam was very good (she gave us extra time).

24

The grading policy of this class is so inconsistent that two answers that say the same thing may vary more than 50%.  The professor explained that we should not only answer the question, but we MUST add additional information, the nature of which she does not provide.  Granted, she offers extra points for extra information; but when this may lead to a grade of B for a 100% performance on a test (because someone else got a 160 score) this is wrong.  At times, this seems like intentional confusion.  Currently, I am at the B+ level, ONLY because of these extra points, NOT because of my correct answers.  Both correct answers and extra information should be mutually exclusive to maximize performance expectations of the students.  Thank you.

SPRING 2003: MCB 4203 - 01 MICROBIAL PATHOGENICITY
1

Excellent professor.  Knows the material very well and is very kind.

2

The course was well put together and I leaned a lot form the information given.  It was a very interesting class.

3

Excellent teacher, extremely informative, and makes class interesting.  Stimulates class attendance (for those who actually want to learn).  I would love to take other classes with her!  Great personality!!!

4

Dr. Mathee is one of the most sincere, thoughtful, interesting professors I have had in my collegiate career.  She is a wonderful instructor!  One of the most fascinating courses I have ever taken.

5

I like the knowledge the professor had of the course content.  She didn’t fumble for responses.  It was impressive considering the vastness of the field.  Makes us feel comfortable, especially during testing environment.  Great professor.

6

I enjoyed this course.  The instructor was very motivating.  I enjoyed the slides.  Since the class was so small it was very personal.  The instructor was fun.

7

The slides shown in the lectures had many spelling errors.  Fro example many bacteria are not spelled correctly.  The need to be improved and revised.  Also there were some minor errors on the lecture slides.

8

Prof. Mathee is a great professor. Makes class very interesting and worth my time. I have learned a lot in her class because she’s made it great.

FALL 2002: PCB 6025 - 01 MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY I
CO-TAUGHT WITH DR. JIM ALLEN
1

She was always very well-prepared for the class. Her notes were extensive and helped us to study for the exam. She gave regular quizzes which kept us on our toes. The lecture was very informative. The quizzes were thought provoking.

2

Wants to make classroom a stressful environment. Appears more interested in intimidating or failing students than encouraging learning. “Tough love” is okay but if no respect for students or if tries to intimidate – backfires. Needs to label figures when correspond to text. Return qyuzzes in a more timely manner. Answer questions when student goes for help-not pose more questions. Post notes prior from the beginning of the semester and not at end. Class-material is complicated and having your notes to amend with our notes would be very helpful.

3

Excellent lecturer, very well organized in class. I feel the second exam, specifically the 60-point question was worth too many points. It took a very long time to answer and was the kind of question where if you get confused, or misunderstood part of it, it affected the rest of the question. Personally, this was a terrible question for me and my style of learning. Being worth such a large part of the test really hurt my grade.

4

Should have more flexibility on student answers that show sound logic on reasonable interpretations of ambiguously stated facts.

5

First thing, I would not recommend this professor to anyone. She is not a good teacher. How good is to cover material without caring if the student fully understands the material. Just because we are graduate students doesn’t mean that we know everything (like she expects). She flies to the lectures and sometimes doesn’t explain herself very well. Overall and in summary, I had an horrible experience in his (her) section. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a very knowledgeable person in her field, but in my opinion she doesn’t have the skill to pass on her knowledge to the students.

SPRING 2002: BSC 5935 - 01 TOPICS IN BIOLOGY
1

Lab meetings are stressful and long. The course is good in the sense that new techniques are studied. Treatment of student ideas are usually unrespectful and treatment varies from student to student. She usually interrupts and make noises if the student is not correct. She does not accept any type of criticisms or mistakes.

2

We feel very bad after the lab meeting. It is very stressful. I am growing grey hair now.

3

As students we are here to learn. You are our teacher. Don’t make us feel like scum because we made a mistake. Instead teach us. Allow us to learn without hating the material.

SPRING 2002: MCB 5315 - 01 CLONING WORKSHOP
1

Deciding to give a final near the end of the semester was not expected of appreciated after students planned their semester based on the schedule giving out at the beginning of the semester.

2

I learned a lot in the workshop, but it was more time and work than a two-credit class should be.  More practical hands on work would have been good – that’s what I took the course for.  A syllabus needs to be flexible, but this syllabus was overly flexible, with a FINAL that was not included.

3

I enjoyed this class very much.  It definitely helped me in my own research.  Dr. Mathee was an excellent teacher.  I always understood everything that she taught.  The only complaint that I have is that the amount of work required for this class would be better for a 3 credit course.  I would have taken the course if it was 3 credits because the topic interested me.  In the future, I would definitely suggest a 3 credit course rather than the workshop.

SPRING 2002: BSC 4934 - 01 TOPICS IN BIOLOGY
1

Dr. Mathee is an intelligent and very challenging professor. When she knows that the students are capable of performing good she expects them to perform excellent. I really enjoyed her class except that she is rude sometimes with some students. She should respect all her students more instead of criticizing them so much.  Instead of humiliating them so frequently, she should encourage and stimulate them all the time.

2

Dr. Mathee is very well prepared and has a very solid knowledge.

SPRING 2002: MCB 4203 - 01 MICROBIAL PATHOGENICITY
1

Fun and stimulating. Excellent teacher. Thoroughly explains the material. I will recommend to others.

2

The content of the course is appropriate but the workload in terms of timing of quizzes is too much.

3

I am very glad I took this class. I really am learning a lot. Dr. Mathee is a very fair instructor who tries to facilitate the students’ learning and encouragement to do well in the course.

FALL 2001: BSC 4931 - 02 UNDERGRADUATE SEMINAR
1

I’ve learned a lot about Pseudomonas aeruginosa than I ever imagined.  Not only that but I’ve also learned how to do power point and HTML in this class.

2

Dr. Mathee complied with all class assignments and was very available to help students outside of the classroom. I would strongly recommend her.

3

Good class.  Very interesting.  However, it was hard to grasp what you wanted from us.  For example how long the presentation had to be and what the content should consist of.

4

Great time, good food, fun classes, and delicious wine.

5

You are very intelligent and very busy.  But when we come to your office calm down and listen and give us 2 minutes, as busy as you are we are your students!  But you were a very good teacher and I learned so much!

6

I liked interactivity in this class.  The professor was very knowledgeable about the material.  It is always good to have a professor that not only knows the material but also is a good instructor.  Dr. Mathee should be commended for her effort to help the students.  Good work.

7

Dr. Mathee has proved to be and excellent instructor with good skill.

8

She is an excellent professor, a great asset to the institution.  She has been a great help in and out of the classroom.  I have learned so much.

9

Very good professor!

10

Dr. Mathee was an excellent professor and encouraged learning in this course.  She was very respectful and was very knowledgeable in the subject.

11

She is a good professor

12

Dr. Mathee is an excellent professor.  She is very knowledgeable of her subject.  I thoroughly enjoyed this course.  She was always more than willing to help wherever possible.

FALL 2001: PCB 6025 - 01 MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY I
CO-TAUGHT WITH DR. JOHN MAKEMSON
1

I thought the second part of this course taught by Dr. Mathee was good since I learned a lot throughout. Much of it, however, was through self-teaching. Dr. Mathee often wanted to cover more material than she really could. So we taught ourselves from the text. In rushing, she sounded confused and scattered at the beginning of the course. As the lectures went on, her teaching improved because I think she covered things a bit more extensively and had a better handle on the material. Exams were very challenging since there was a lot of information to learn in a short time. She expected us to know all of it despite having rushed through it in lecture. Having said that, however, I feel the exams ere fair and forced us to really know and understand the material which is good testing unlike the Makenson half of the course. She graded the tests fairly and I feel like I learned from them. My complaints are that Dr. Mathee should be more selective with his lecture notes so that he can really cover the material more thoroughly than she did and she should not assign so many quotes and homework as it was a bit much for ½ a semester. Overall, I enjoyed the class and learned from it and I believe that Dr. Mathee will improve with time as she did with this course. The end was much better than the beginning.

2

This part of the course was interesting and stimulating with the downpour of tons of information. Te continuous evaluation via quizzes and series of examination was very exhaustive, but in fact, the long run it is beneficial. The instructor focused a lot on some of the foundations and terminology which are important for the development of the students as scientists. On the other hand, some (1/2) lectures were not very interesting and in fact, less informative.

3

Dr Mathee is a good professor and has good PowerPoint presentations. She made the class interesting but at the same time it was very stressful and time consuming….overall a lot of work was required, but in hindsight, it made it easier for the rest of the class work (exams)

4

This course had so much information, we need more class time….I thought! It would be a helpful to put the lecture NOTES or background information on the websites. It would help us narrow down topics and focus more for exams. Even if you put up previous semester notes, that would help too. In the beginning the book was hard to follow, but it did get better, believe it or not.

5

The course material would have been more helpful if presented at the beginning; That is, text and handouts. The first tests were a bit of surprise. I think students perform better w/ less surprises & more consistency.
Good job bringing in history & anecdotes, they stimulate interest I think.

6

Dr Mathee, I like the structure of the course. Maybe put less weight on the homework, let the students follow their schedule a bit better.

7

A suggestion for next time.

  • Although the quizzes were helpful for keeping up with the lectures, there were too many. One quiz/week should have been enough. With 2 quizzes there was so much work required to keep up and this resulted other class suffering.
  • 1st quiz was unrealistic. This was given on our knowledge form previous class. This is fine, but for this “quiz” to count as 10 % of the grade is unfair. It should be weighted the same as all the other quizzes
  •  More time for exams. The exams were long and if you did not come an hour earlier, there was no way to answer all questions.
  • In the beginning, there was great disorganization.
  • Once the power Point lectures began they were much better, but then we had the Speedy Gonzales phenomenon
  • I think that a lot of the information is superfluous and if only the necessary stuff was focused on we would have time for everything.
8

The order of the syllabus should be revised. Maybe the first instructor should teach last and vice versa in order for the subject matter being taught to have more meaning to the students.
Two quizzes a week would be ideal if the students didn’t have more classes, but they do and one quiz truly is sufficient to keep us up-to-date with what is being lectured.

SPRING 2001: MCB 4203 - 01 MICROBIAL PATHOGENICITY
1

I have not had an instructor that has used power point so much before.  I think if is great to help us to visualize what you are talking about and to see the lecture notes.  It must take a long time to prepare but it is a great learning tool.  You have a great way with students and I appreciate you.  Knowing me by my first name!  I think you can slow down on some of the lectures because we do not have a lot of class time!  Thank you.

2

One of the most important things for students (who actually want to learn) is to have an interesting class taught by a professor that knows the subject of my study.  Despite of the previous comments I heard before registering to this class I think we have both of these requirements.  But, of course, I can’t say the same about the fact that the classroom is always closed, and all of the other details that are clearly affecting us.

3

This is a very interesting course.  It’s a really good review for students who know microbiology but want to advance their knowledge in that subject.  Since I like microbiology is one of my favorite subject, I’ve really enjoying this course.

4

The subject matter is very interesting.  You go through it very quickly and it is difficult to keep up; however, getting copies of the notes is very helpful.  I also find it difficult to figure out what is “important” and what is “too detailed”.

5

Class is informative, graphs are great.  Hopefully all material given will be what the test consider.  Then I will make a post-test comment.

6

The before material is suitable to the course, but the pace of lecture is slightly fast, the overheads, handouts, power point, are very helpful to the presentation.  More discussion may be helpful to understanding.

7

So far, I am enjoying the lecture. Visual aids are good –notes reinforce the lecture.  Sometimes a little to fast.  Maybe pass out the lecture notes before the lecture.

8

Good – show down and also doesn’t follow book to close.

9

Very interesting Dr. Mathee does a great job explaining.  She is very helpful when you do not understand a subject.  Furthermore, she knows the material very well.

10

Have a print out of the notes before class, so you can go faster, without us being lost.  “You are too fast!”

11

I think this course is very interesting and I like it very much.  It applies a great deal to my career and I was thrilled that it was offered.

12

I think the lectures go too fast sometimes and its difficult to write everything down.  You should give us more time to copy.  The book sucks.

13

Good lectures, I hate the book you were right it’s more for medical students; maybe you can print out your lectures and we can add to the print outs as you lecture so we don’t waste time copying and slowing down writing notes.
P.S. – you’re a very intelligent professor of microbiology.

14

Very interesting lecture.  Sometimes; however, the professor goes too quickly.  The speed can be dealt with when we have the printed power point notes during the lecture.  I am also frustrated with the book.  It’s much easier to follow then the teachers and the students both use the same books.

15

Interesting covers course, but damn, the material is kind of difficult.  Nothing studying wouldn’t cure.

16

The material needs to be more helpful.

17

The instructor knows or is knowledgeable on certain topics although, while in class questions her own overhead.  She should answer her own questions before she arrives in class.  Also once she has a preconception regarding a student she holds it against them.  If a student is late she doesn’t need to embarrass them she doesn’t know the circumstances.

18

Thanks for making this one of my favorite classes ever!  The handouts are fantastic.  They allow us to pay attention in class instead of struggling to scribble down everything said.

19

I appreciate Dr. Mathee’s willingness to help students outside of class.

20

Dr. Mathee at times can be helpful.  I find that when I ask for help outside of class she can be somewhat abrasive.

21

Great teacher, great class, but the book should be charged.  It has been a pleasure to be your student.

22

Awesome class; professor very knowledgeable fair exams, good lectures.

FALL 2000: PCB 6990 - 01 MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY I
CO-TAUGHT WITH DR. JOHN MAKEMSON (EXPERIMENTAL COURSE)
1

She is an excellent professor that will bring up the standard of graduate students from this university.  She has challenged us.  I like her style of teaching.

2

The course is very good.  It will be better if more application material is combined with the theory.  For that the course would have to be extended because as it is now is too condensed, too much material for such and small period of time.

3

The course is a good course, but at the graduate level so much information shouldn’t be covered so quickly.  It prevents the student from going in depth and the subject.  The course would be a lot better if covered in two semesters.  All the microbiology was covered in a month and a half.  Grading should be uniform.

4

It’s a good course.  But too many material covered for us to learn every thing in detail.  This material should be covered in two semesters.

SPRING 2000: MCB 5993 - 01 CLONING DNA WORKSHOP
1

I found much of the lecture focused on methods and lab practices.  These concepts are better learned for some students if they are practiced hands on.  Integration of more time in the lab with instruction would be an improvement.  I believe that general objectives were met.  There was good flow of concept.  Pick a date in the future i.e. every W or R, try not to move days as much.

2

For a student like me who didn’t have a clue about cloning until this time this workshop with her is doing miracles.  For me, she is just the right kind of person I was looking for to learn about cloning.

3

A well-defined syllabus would be very helpful.  Some of the grading policies weren’t as clear as they should.  The class was very good and I’m sure that the next time will be better.  A time schedule would benefit students.

4

Please give us a prepared note before hand so that we can read ahead of the lecture.

FALL 1999: MCB 4203 - 01MICROBIAL PATHOGENICITY (TWO GUEST LECTURES)
1

During the two days of teaching, Professor Mathee has proved tremendous efficiency and knowledge of the subject.  Her teaching method is very clear and efficient.  The subject she presented was very interesting.  Overall she is great.

2

Dr. Mathee is knowledgeable about the subject and students, but she lectures too, too fast and needs to use more examples. Needs to slow down a little.  Also needs to be more clear with questions on exams.

3

I preferred your second lecture, when you provided notes.  You lectures are a bit fast and with a lot of detail, therefore, the notes where helpful.  For test, I don’t think that getting the spelling of bacteria names correct is all that important at undergrad level.  Better test on more general concepts, key concepts.

4

Instructor should be more clear on lectures, language was a barrier very difficult to understand.  Fair

5

We need more interest in what you are learning and students don’t like when professors just use overheads because you lose our attention.  It is good to give copies but teach more on the board.

6

Very interesting teaching style which stimulates the student to learn more by doing independent research.

7

She has a lot of knowledge on the subjects she covered but she goes too fast.  She doesn’t stop to ask weather or not the class is following her or lost.  When a teacher covers so much material she should indicate to important issues.  Speed is her main problem.  Slow Down!!!

8

Did not have enough time to teach the extensive amount of material covered in two lectures.  Did not like test format, confusing.  Good lecturer maybe could slow down a little.  Very knowledgeable in topics covered.

9

Did not say we would be penalized for spelling errors.  Spoke too fast during lecture.

10

The lecture was too fast. The notes were hard to understand.
