CHM-4610L

 Advanced Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory

Instructor: Ramon Lopez de la Vega, Associate Professor (CP 329).

tel: 348-3086, email: lopezdel@fiu.edu, http://www.fiu.edu/~lopezdel

Prerequisite or Co requisite: Advanced Inorganic Chemistry - CHM 4610.

Textbook: "Microscale Inorganic Chemistry" by Z. Szafran, R.M. Pike,  M. M. Singh (J. Wiley), plus handouts from instructor.

Sessions:   CHM 4610L-01: Mondays 1:00 p.m.   3:50 p.m.

Office Hours: Mondays 12 noon  -1p.m or by appointment.  More office hours will be announced as the term progresses

Material, Homework and Grading: We will carry out 6 laboratory experimental units each, plus a literature project.  Laboratory units will normally take one or two lab periods.

It is imperative to leave materials neat and safely stored when you leave the lab.  On the first Friday after the unit is complete, at 5:00 p.m. your laboratory notebooks reporting the experimental procedures and results have to be handed in or left in my mailbox (CP 304) in order to be graded.  Laboratory notebooks will not be accepted after this time.  The notebook reports will also include answers to assigned questions relevant to the theoretical and experimental part of the unit.  Some of the questions may require use of the literature.  The reports must be clearly written and scientifically sound.  The final grade for the class will be based on the weighted average of laboratory notebook reports for each unit, as well as on general preparation and contribution to laboratory work, including safety awareness.  It is imperative that you show up for laboratory on time and that you have read in advance about the experimental and theoretical part of the unit. Check the class website frequently for up-to-date calendar, class announcements, and useful links for the class.
