This is to ask that you serve on an important committee that will help the University Libraries deal with some important issues relating to the broad area of digital library development. The function of this working group, to be chaired by Gail Clement, is the following: 1. Recommend to library administration short and long-term goals for digital library development. This will relate not only to the library role in the development of the IBM Digital Library Software, but also to the broader area of digital services and their impact on library functions and resources. These include, but are not limited to, reserve services; GIS; the Everglades Information Network; electronic journals; and to the use of the new processing unit. 2. Develop a draft Strategic Plan for inclusion in library goals and objectives, one that will also stand by itself in defining library activity in this area. 3. Identify challenges and issues that must be faced in order to achieve the FIU vision of digital library service outlined in long-term goals and objectives. 4. Define work-flow challenges and resource requirements. I will serve as an ex-officio member of this group. In addition, the Working Group will draw on the expertise of others within and outside the library organization depending on the issue being studied.
