Gail Clement, Chairperson; Dr. Miller, Salvador Miranda, Sherry Carrillo, Mayra Nemeth, Vicki Grahame, Stephanie Brenenson, Jennifer Fu, David Goldsmith, Heidi Lowry, and Nancy Hershoff.
The minutes of the meeting of April 13, 1998 were approved as submitted. When reviewing the minutes, Jennifer Fu asked a question about where the IBM Digital Library fits into the FIU digital library and the FIU Libraries. Dr. Miller responded that the FIU Libraries should work in collaboration with other digital library initiatives on campus to create the digital library in its broadest sense to meet the information needs of the FIU communities.
There were questions concerning "what is the digital library" and "what is the expectation of the group". Dr. Miller responded that the FIU digital library should comprise all digital library initiatives on campus. Dr. Miller went on to further explain that it was his hope to divide the group into several subgroups, tackling various projects. The work done by the subgroups should be reviewed and discussed by the entire group. Sherry Carrillo echoed that she would like to see e-reserves getting underway since all the needed equipment and software are in place.
Gail Clement emphasized the importance and immediacy of continuing education for all members of the group and also for the library staff in general. Jennifer Fu agreed and thought we had sufficient in-house expertise to start CE workshops for the group. Gail Clement thought bringing in outside experts would be very helpful, too.
Questions were raised about the role of the Instructional Media in digitizing and allocation of resources. Dr. Miller informed the group that the roles of several units in the digital library endeavor might be changing with the departure of the Director of Computer Services. However, the group felt that different alternatives should be taken into consideration when dealing with production. Duplication of sophisticated digitizing equipment should be avoided.
A discussion followed on whether to expand the CE sessions to include appropriate staff. It was decided that the CE sessions would be kept within the group with the exception of the systems staff. Two CE sessions were scheduled for 9:00-1:00, May 26, on Digital Publishing 101, and June 4, on Metadata and other issues, at the GIS Lab.
Dr. Miller shared with the group a draft of the criteria for consideration of digitization projects as an example of a possible group product, which only required half an hour's work. This draft was prompted by a request from the director of the art museum to digitize the whole collection for administrative purposes. Questions were raised regarding "support instruction" in item one of the draft. Dr. Miller expressed his point of view and also invited group discussion on it. Gail Clement also went over the criteria that UC Berkeley established, and Dr. Miller agreed that our draft would need to be expanded to incorporate some additional points of consideration. The final draft criteria will be presented to Dr. Arthur Gloster for discussion and final approval.
Jennifer Fu asked a question about the availability of the Blue Angel software, which is being used for the IBM Digital Library Project. Gail Clement explained that the Blue Angel software is used for the creation of metadata to provide searching capabilities of digital libraries in a fashion analagous to those of an OPAC for a traditional library. Part of the software is owned by the Everglades Digital Library Project. Dr. Miller suggested that some sort of cooperative acquisitions of the package be considered if it is deemed necessary. Dr. Miller went on to state that with the change in leadership in UCS, there will be outside consultation in terms of where we are in the digital library initiatives. A question about metadata prompted Gail Clement to do a brief impromptu CE session on it.
Sherry Carrillo expressed her concern about the progress of e-reserves and would like for the group to structure the e-reserves effort. David Goldsmith reported that he had obtained storage space for e-reserves and acquired the FCLA ERC w-reserve software to create unlinked item records. Six faculty members at the North Campus were contacted and agreed to have their materials made available through e-reserves. Gail asked that David take the lead in this effort and set up in-house workflow and draft procedures. David will also do a demo on the e-reserves project at 2:00 p.m. on June 4, 1998 . The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
