1.) The Minutes of December 11 were approved. They are posted on the library web page.
2.) Director's Report
- A Building Use Policy has been drafted and will be brought to this group for review at the next meeting.
- Digitizing slides:
The library is working with faculty to expedite the digitization of slides for
class presentations. In some cases the quality of resolution represents a
challenge, depending on the aspect of the image being taught.
A pilot project is underway with Geology slides to test the usefulness of digitized images in this field.
- Library Furnishings:
$369,000 was received to complete most of the additional furnishings for the Green Library. $95,000 is still needed. Items purchased include: furniture for music listening; staff workstations; media equipment; end panels; and furniture for the Faculty Room.
- FCLA-Equipment:
$237,00 was received for both campuses from FCLA. North Campus will be wired with atm infrastucture. FCLA funds for the atm network were supplemented with funds from IRM. The bulk of the FCLA funds were spent on additional public workstations.
- WebLuis Enhancements:
Self renewal of library materials should be operational this summer. Faculty will still need to return items one time per year.
- Electronic Journals:
Elsevier: The SUS libraries are in the middle of negotiations for the renewal of the Elsevier contract. Elsevier is difficult to negotiate with. Many of the earlier quality problems, such as missing issu es, and poor quality images,
have been recently resolved.
The Library has recently acquired almost 500 new electronic journal subscriptions. 175 titles are from Academic Press/Ideal, 40 titles are from Project Muse, 111 titles are from MCB Publishers, and 169 titles are from FirstSearch's Electronic Collection Online (ECO). A new e-journal page will be posted under the Electronic Library section of the Library home page for easy access. All titles will also be catalogued in WebLuis FIU Catalog.
The library will eventually need to look at the cancellation of print titles to support electronic format. We cannot continue to subscribe to both formats.
- Electronic Reserves:
A pilot project was completed using non-copyright items. The library is now dealing with the copyright issues for placing copyrighted articles on electronic reserves. Several questions related to copyright were raised. It was suggested that the library write an article for Info about what faculty need to know about copyright.
- A new library home page will be released in the summer. The structure will be very different and more intuitive. A subject approach to resources is under development as well.
- The SUS libraries have requested funds to replace WebLUIS.
3.) SACS Report:
-Committee representatives should solicit input via electronic mail or in
person from their colleagues.
-The library survey was distributed and the
results are being tabulated.
-The suggestion was made to add language to section. 5.1.1.1 "commercially
produced" in addition to Internet resources.
-Thanks to the library for their work.
Questions:
1.) Can we have more signs in the library, particularly directory information in the elevators?
- New signs placed last week
- Directories are on order
2.) What is the relationship of the library to media equipment distribution?
- New equipment has been ordered for in-library use.
- The Controllers office, Purchasing, and Media Relations all have to move out before audio/visual space can be fully utilized for classroom viewing.
- At North Campus, the library is now responsible for equipment distribution. At University Park, Instruction Technology is still responsible.
3.) The Architecture accreditation team was very impressed with the library. John Stuart thanked the staff for their help.
4.) Thanks also to the Library from the College of Education for assistance with their Teacher Training programs.
Respectfully submitted,
Patricia Iannuzzi
