1. The Minutes were approved with corrections. They will be posted on the library web page with the Faculty Senate Library Committee Minutes.
2. Report from the Library - Dr. Miller
- Faculty Senate Library Fund - the library is still accepting contributions from faculty for an endowment for library materials. Sixty participants are currently enrolled. There will be a Faculty Library Room with donor wall designated within the library at University Park and an area with a similar donor wall at North Campus. The cost is $300.
- Dr. Miller sent an e-mail to all faculty announcing the Electronic Collection Online (ECO) trial for full text electronic journals. Faculty are encouraged to try it and send comments.
- There was a request for full access to the Springer Lecture notes. Patricia Iannuzzi will investigate availability.
- The recommendation was made to invest in more equipment as the Library realizes savings from conversion to electronic format. It was pointed out that there is rarely a savings, and that usually there is a net increase.
- Comments were made about the time lag for the data load for Elsevier titles. This is a known problem that FCLA is working on with Elsevier.
- There was some discussion about preference for print vs electronic versions of journals. Pro's and con's for both formats were noted. The library cannot afford to continue to subscribe to both and pay for redundancy. The importance of complete cover to cover sanning was emphasized.
- FSU is contemplating withdrawal from the Elsevier contract. We are in the process of negotiating a statewide contract for Elsevier that includes all institutions and all titles.
- $250,000 in funding is available for refurbishing the NC library. This funding came through the Panther Pride program
- The Information Literacy Proposal was approved by the Faculty Senate.
- The task of furnishing the Green Library is still ongoing. Several administrative units must relocate before the music listening area on the 5th floor can be completed.
3. Collection Management - Salvador Miranda
- The deadline for monograph requests is March 1, 1999
- The password and user name for the web-based LRF form is: uplib for University Park and nclib for North Campus.
- The forms are currently scripted to go to the library, but systems staff are revising them so that requests will go to the e-mail of the departmental library representative.
- The suggestion was made that the library be represented in the University Research I efforts. Committee members further noted that the library should continue to strengthen the monograph collection.
4. Study Carrels - Mayra Fernandez
- The Library is enforcing the rules and regulations that were initially proposed by the Faculty Senate Library Committee.
- Architecture was omitted from the original allocation list for the carrels because they did not yet exist. They will now be added. Mayra will follow up with institutional research to identify the number of faculty so that the appropriate number of carrels will be allocated. This will affect the final number available to the other schools.
- Each college will decide how it wants to allocate the carrels for their faculty. In Arts and Sciences, each department will get one carrel and the department will decide how to use it.
- There have been no problems or grievances with the current procedures for graduate students. There is a change in
the fee for replacement and lost keys to reflect actual cost.
- Graduate students may share carrels. Mayra will develop procedures.
5. Other Business
- There was a reminder that the electronic suggestion form is available on the library's web page. Please use it to send comments to the library.
- Patricia Iannuzzi announced that an Information Literacy Advisory Group will be appointed by the library. This group of faculty will work with the Library Information Literacy Committee on the implementation of the Information Literacy Proposal.
- Workshops for faculty are also available. Library representatives are encouraged to coordinate a workshop for their departments with Patricia Iannuzzi.
- The suggestion was made to the library to pursue the development of a WebLUIS Intercampus Loan form linked to the bibliographic record similar to the ILL form.
Respectfully submitted,
Patricia Iannuzzi
