Purpose of this guide

• This guide is designed to be interdisciplinary rather than limited in scope for one specific field of study or research. This guide should suffice for researchers and students of humanities, social sciences, and general interest or need. Additionally, this guide is designed to be a time relevant, evolving website guide intended to adapt to changing content, need, and format. If you know of a source, whether in print or on the Web, and the source is academic and informative rather than purely entertainment in content, please send your suggestions. Libraries and web-based handouts grow and change continuously. Your involvement will ensure relevancy and applicability of content. Good luck in your search!

  Before you start ...

• Have you narrowed your search first? Searching in the FIU Catalog, on the Web, or in print and online indexes and catalogs before deciding upon a specific category of gay and lesbian studies could be a time bandit. The words "gay" and "lesbian" encompass a multitude of definitions. For some people, "gay" could mean a confirmed or perceived definition of sexuality. For others, the term "gay" defines one's style, movements, or attitude. In a social setting, however, to be called "gay" could be no different from being labeled as "married" or "Catholic". The non-academic definitions of the words "gay" and "lesbian" usually have one meaning -- same sex orientation.

• In the academic environment, however, the terms "gay" and "lesbian" can have dramatically different meanings. For health professionals, "gay" refers to sexual practice. For students of literature, "gay" discerns the difference between the intent of Oscar Wilde's and Noel Coward's writings from those of Jane Austin and P.G. Wodehouse. Each discipline -- nursing, political science, sociology, psychology, philosophy and religion, law, fine arts, and others -- has a particular interpretation of "gay" and "lesbian". So, before you research about gays and lesbians, narrow your topic to a specific area of interest, such as gays in literature, lesbians in the military, gays in the movies, or lesbians in the music industry.

Subject Searching in WebLUIS

• Using the correct words when performing a subject search in any online or print reference source is a skill worth developing. Why? Because the use of the wrong word or words, even if you think these words make sense, will either waste your time, result in an inefficient search result, or both. Use one or more of these terms when searching in the FIU Catalog and you will be more successful.

• Before beginning your search, successful FIU Catalog subject searching requires the correct subject word or words. Take just a few minutes and consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings books, otherwise known as the "red books" located in multi-volume sets throughout the library. Ask for assistance from the Reference Desk, 2nd floor, if you need advice. Remember -- all materials in the FIU Catalog and in the library are organized according to the exact subject word or words found in the "red books". Listed below are only a few of the many, many official subject words from the "red books" concerning gay and/or lesbian related studies and information.

Keyword Searching in the FIU Catalog

• Keywords are not official subject words, therefore your search result may be either less than what you had hoped or more than you could ever need or read. However, keywords searches are sometimes a good place to start. Use one or more of these terms when performing a keyword search:

• Materials located in the General Collection can be accessed by two methods: (1) using the FIU Catalog to perform a subject heading or keyword search or (2) discoverning a call numbered area which contains desired materials and "scanning the shelves" in person. Refer to the SUBJECT AND KEYWORD SEARCHING section above for tips. Essentially, though, your search for materials in the General Collection will need to concentrate on particular areas of study. For example, information about gays in business will be in the business section, lesbians and literature in the literature section, and so on.
