Information Literacy Advisory Group

Description and Charge

The Information Literacy Advisory Group is comprised of eight faculty members from across the curriculum who work together with librarians to plan the implementation of information literacy education at Florida International University. The Information Literacy Advisory Group works together with the FIU Libraries Information Literacy and Library Instruction Committee to implement the Information Literacy Proposal approved by the Faculty Senate at its November 10, 1998 meeting. The Advisory Group will serve as a conduit for communication between academic departments and the library as we perform the following tasks:

Review the mission statement for Information Literacy at FIU.
Review goals and objectives for information literacy.
Identify desired information literacy competencies across the curriculum.
Publicize information related to information literacy to faculty and administrators.
Help individual faculty and academic programs identify ways to integrate information literacy into existing core courses.
Create workshops for faculty to help them develop assignments that incorporate desired information literacy outcomes.
Identify models for delivery of information literacy education including a variety of teaching and learning styles, both within a classroom and utilizing technology.
Develop assessment methodologies that measure student development of information literacy competencies.

The Advisory Group meets approximately three times each semester with the members of the FIU Libraries Information Literacy and Library Instruction Committee. Individual members of the Advisory Group may volunteer to work with librarians on specific information literacy tasks (e.g., draft information literacy competencies). Service to the Advisory Group on Information Literacy is for two academic years.
