• Understand the scope of databases available for research in their discipline.
• Access and use relevant databases, available for FIU users only, on the WWW and on CDROM.
• Develop effective search strategies in various search engines and interfaces using keywords, boolean, truncation, and proximity.
• Use table of contents services for journals, as well as electronic journal services.
• Search full-text databases for journal and newspaper articles.
• Search national databases for all materials owned by research libraries.
• Use electronic Interlibrary Loan Services.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able:

• Use search engines, directories, and metasearch engines to search the WWW efficiently.

• Find and use important "jump sites" for the discipline.

• Locate and use finding aids for manuscript collections on the WWW.
• Locate and use digital library collections for primary source collections.
• Locate download, and install necessary plug-ins for using multimedia digital library collections.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Integrate library resources for distance learners into online courses.
• Provide links to relevant citation databases and full text articles.
• Use electronic reserves for course material.
• Provide online links to relevant library instructional materials.
• Connect to statewide Electronic Reference and Referral Center for online library support.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Apply criteria for critical thinking and information literacy for course assignments.
• Evaluate existing assignments for critical thinking and information literacy components.
• Rewrite existing assignments to strengthen information literacy and critical thinking components.
• Develop new assignments that incorporate technology, critical thinking and information literacy outcomes.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Use "START checklist" for evaluating information found on the WWW and in library resources.
• Integrate "START checklist" into student assignments.
• Teach students to question authority and expertise of authors, publishers, and other creators of information
• Teach students to distinguish among fact and opinion and to recognize bias.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Use web sites about plagiarism to develop activities for students to learn proper methods for citation.
• Direct students to appropriate web sites for proper form of citation for electronic formats of information.
• Build reference collection of web sites that provide student term papers.
• Use their own information literacy skills to reduce occurrences of plagiarism.
