New Students
If you are new in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, you should first see the Office of Student Services, to introduce you to the "basics" of the school, requirements, courses, etc. They will also conduct an audit of all previous college work. You will find the secretary extremely helpful and she will be more than glad to let you know how to set up an appointment--call 305-919-5940.

You will later be assigned a faculty advisor who will assist you until you graduate. The receptionists and secretaries will be more than glad to indicate to you where office hours are posted so you can make an appointment to discuss your plans, your future and the important things that will help make your time in our department pleasurable. Check the posted lists in the faculty office area or check with the student services office to find out to whom you have been assigned.

NOTE: There is no telephone advising.

Subsequent pages of this package contain a list of courses as we normally offer them. One of the most important things to remember is that we do not offer all the courses every term. Therefore, when you need to register, enroll in OUR courses first. The yearly schedule sheet allows you to find out when OUR courses might be offered. In addition, a course may have more than one section, i.e., a section on Monday and another one on Wednesday. The reference number is the key to enrolling in the class that is most convenient for you. A list of next term's courses will be available with reference numbers, days and times offered. You should get a copy and study it before you meet with the advisor and/or the faculty advisor.

Some courses have a co- or prerequisite. Study the program sheet and follow it in an orderly fashion to avoid unnecessary delays while in the track. Make sure you have taken any pre-requisites before enrolling in the class.

Each professor has his/her own attendance policy. However, there is a school policy which states if you are not there to answer roll the first day of class, you may be dropped from the class.

Please do not wait until the last minute to learn if you have any deficiencies from the lower division. Some students apply for graduation and learn that they might have to stay here one or two more terms to satisfy these deficiencies. Make it a point to ask the student services coordinator during your first visit if you have any of these deficiencies. If you do, re-take or take whatever courses you need to take to get rid of these deficiencies as soon as possible.

NOTE: It is also YOUR responsibility to READ the university catalog for the year that you enrolled in SJMC classes. Of importance to you are the pages with general information and the pages pertaining to our school. Please familiarize yourself with requirements. While you study those pages you will learn, for instance, an AA degree from a community college might not transfer all 60 credits into the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Please be advised that you CANNOT take any other or additional or different courses than those listed in this package without the express written consent of a faculty advisor.
