adamsWilliam Adams, M.A. associate professor, has written on the teaching of public relations as well as the importance of mutual understanding and cooperation between professional practitioners and the academy. His professional background includes 25 years of corporate public relations positions. Recent publications include a chapter on media relations and public affairs in Public Affairs in an Era of change.


Catherine AhlesCATHERINE B. AHLES, M.B.A, associate professor, has been awarded two Silver Anvils, the highest recognition in the profession for public relations campaigns. She is former national secretary of the Public Relations Society of America, has been president of two local chapters of the PRSA, and has 27 years of experience as public relations practitioner and counselor.


bermanMargo Berman, M.M. associate professor, has received many international awards as a writer/director. She has written for business publications and held corporate training seminars. A past president of the Miami chapter of Women in Communications, Inc., she was named Chapter Headliner and Outstanding National Faculty Advisor of the Year.

delgadoBert Delgado, M.A. associate professor, studied film and TV production and directing in Rome and worked in television in New York and Miami. He has received several awards from the industry as well the FIU Excellence in Advising Award in 1993, Excellence in Teaching Award in 1994, Excellence in Service Award in 1995 and the Teacher Incentive Program Award from the State of Florida.


diamentMario Diament, M.A. associate professor, is coordinator of the Spanish-Language Journalism master's degree program. A native Argentinean, he is a veteran foreign correspondent and a former executive editor of one of the leading newspapers in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Diament is also a playwright and has had plays produced in the US and abroad.

gladwinHugh Gladwin, Ph.D. director of the Institute for Public Opinion Research (IPOR) and associate professor, Sociology/Anthropology, has combined anthropology, survey research and computer programming in his career. He has done research in West Africa and Mexico in addition to Florida.


greenCharles H. Green, B.A. director of the International Media Center, was a foreign correspondent and news executive with the Associated Press for 24 years. He was chief of bureau for the AP in Mexico City, Caracas, Albany, N.Y. and Detroit. He has written about Latin America since 1966 and heads IMC's efforts to provide training to journalists in that area.


hallKevin Hall, B.A. editor-in-residence and head of the Journalism Writing Project, was executive editor of the Miami Herald's Sunday magazine, Tropic, and special projects editor on the Herald's city desk. Funded by grants from the Knight, Hearst and New York Times foundations, the writing project is the basis for SJMC's writing skills.


heiseJ. Arthur Heise, Ph.D. founding dean and professor, served as a reporter and editor with the Buffalo (NY) News and the Associated Press in Berlin, Germany. He is also the founder of SJMC's Latin American Journalism Program and its Institute for Public Opinion Research and is the author of two books and more than 50 articles and monographs in professional and scholarly publications.


kopenLillian Lodge Kopenhaver, Ed.D. associate dean and professor, is a nationally-known authority and researcher on the First Amendment and the student press. She is past president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, College Media Advisers, and the Student Press Law Center, was awarded the Wells Key, the highest honor of the Society of Professional Journalists, and is author of nearly 100 scholarly articles, monographs and books.


martinDavid L. Martinson, Ph.D. professor, teaches journalism/mass communication law and ethics, mass media and society, mass communication theory, and public opinion. He has published articles in a wide variety of journals, including Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Public Relations Quarterly and the Journal of Mass Media Ethics.


Michael McQueenMichael McQueen, M.A. chair, Department of Journalism and Broadcasting and associate professor, Mike McQueen is chair of the Journalism & Broadcasting Department at FIU. Before that, he was a visiting instructor/editor-in-residence at FIU for three years and also has taught in the graduate journalism program at the University of Miami. He has a master's degree from Florida Atlantic University and a bachelor's degree from Florida State University. McQueen spent 18 years as a newspaper editor and reporter. He worked for The Miami Herald, USA Today and the Associated Press.


rosePatricia B. Rose, M.B.A. chair, Department of Advertising & Public Relations, and associate professor, has published numerous articles on Integrated Marketing Communications, including in Latin America. Other publication topics are Spanish language advertising and international communications. She is past-president of Miami Ad Fed, active in IAA, and belongs to numerous academic organizations.

sneedDon Sneed, Ph.D. professor, has worked for newspapers as a writing coach, managing editor, editorial writer, executive editor and copy editor. He has published research on the prison press, libel, political cartoonists and publishers who serve simultaneously as elected officials.


surisCarlos Miguel Suris, M.L.S. coordinator, Student Resource Center, also teaches database and public records reporting. Prior to joining SJMC he worked at FIU's main library. He has become SJMC's database on-line searching mentor. His affinity for cyberspace is balanced with a thorough knowledge of music; he is an accomplished guitarist.


veraldiLorna Veraldi, J.D. associate professor, worked for 12 years in radio and television before joining the FIU faculty in 1988. She was a news writer, producer and reporter. Admitted to the New York Bar in 1982 and a member of the Federal Communications Bar Association, she has represented media clients both as corporate counsel and in private law practice.

andersonSarah Anderson, senior secretary in the Office of Student Services, has more than 20 years experience as a secretary/administrative assistant working for such institutions as Harvard University, the Boston Public School Department, the Children’s Defense Fund, and Bridge Upward Bound. Prior to joining SJMC in fall 1995, she managed her family’s company for seven years.


filipiakPat Filipiak, secretary to the associate dean of the SJMC, has been with the school since December 1995. For 21 years she worked in the restaurant industry in Chicago but returned to her first love, secretarial work, in 1989, in the School of Hospitality Management at FIU where she was secretary in the academic advising office and later secretary to the assistant dean.


stellaAdriana B. Stella, Assistant Director of Student Services joins the SJMC with experience in admissions, recruitment, advising, and counseling. An Alumni of FIU, her interests include travel and volunteering for various children’s causes.



sztamSaul R. Sztam, M.S. Ed. Director of Student Services, joined SJMC with administrative experience in admissions, recruitment, advising, financial services, veterans' affairs, registration, orientation, student success, and staff development. He received his Master's degree in Adult Education and Human Resource Development from FIU. He is currently in the dissertation stages of his Doctoral degree at FIU in Higher Education Administration. Saul is an avid hockey player and fan.


topleyMerci Topley, administrative assistant to the Dean for the past 11 years, was a legal secretary for more than 15 years in the Dade County State Attorney's Office and in the Legal Department of the State of Florida Comptroller, in the regional office in Miami, Florida prior to her employment with The School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Florida International University. In her spare time, Merci is an avid grower and collector of orchids and rare tropical plants.


tuckerCarmen Tucker, senior secretary for the Department of Journalism and Broadcasting, has been with SJMC since June 1995. She has over 25 years secretarial and administrative experience, having worked in New York City for RCA Records, the Metropolitan Opera House and Royal Crown Cola.


IvanIvan Menendez, senior programmer / analyst for SJMC, has been working with computers professionally for over 8 years working for companies such as Energizer Power Systems, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Allconnect Communications and Knight Ridder. In April of 2000 he began to work for FIU as the schools Network Administrator and Webmaster, he manages the schools computer systems including 5 electronic classrooms. He recently finished his bachelor's degree in Psychology at FIU with a focus on Industrial Organization and Behavior Analysis and gently ushered in the life of his infant daughter Sloan in August of 2001.


wernerRobert Werner, senior broadcast engineering technician for SJMC, had a long career in broadcast television with Miami-Dade Community College, eventually becoming director of media services for the Medical Center Campus. In 1995 he began to work for FIU at the Roz & Cal Kovens Conference Center and last year was hired as SJMC’s first engineer to create and run the school’s new studio and broadcast facilities.
