FIU's Certificate in Judaic Studies is an interdisciplinary program, rooted in the humanities, fine arts and social sciences. The program is available to matriculated students as a minor, and independently to non-matriculated students. The Certificate is awarded by FIU's Institute for Judaic and Near Eastern Studies. Courses are offered at FIU's University Park and North Miami campuses, as well as at sites throughout the community. 

To earn the Certificate in Judaic Studies, students take 18 credit hours of approved courses distributed in the areas of Hebrew language, literature and the arts, religious studies, and history and the social sciences.  All courses credited towards the Certificate must be passed with a grade of C or better.

There are 5 requirements.

  3. Literature and the Arts
  4. Religious Studies
  5. History and the Social Sciences

1. Hebrew language (up to 5 credit hours)

    Students must demonstrate an intermediate level of proficiency in either modern or Biblical Hebrew. This may be done by passing the second year Hebrew course in the Division of Modern Language, or the second year Biblical Hebrew course in the Department of Religious Studies, or by examination. Up to five credit hours of Hebrew may be credited toward the Certificate.

2. Foundation Course (3 credit hours)

    All Certificate students must take REL 3600 Judaism.

3. Literature and the Arts

    Certificate students will take at least one 3-hour course in this category. Courses include The Jewish Cinema, Jewish-American Women Writers, and Holocaust Literature.

4. Religious studies (at least 3 credit hours)

    REL 3600-Judaism satisfies this distribution requirement. Other courses include Hebrew Scriptures, Dead Sea Scrolls, Ethics of Judaism, Modernization of Judaism, and The Holocaust.

5. History and the social sciences (at least 3 credit hours)

    Certificate students will take at least one course in this category. Representative courses include Population and Geography of the Middle East, International Relations of the Middle East, History of the Holocaust, Jewish History to 1750, Modern Jewish History, and Black-Jewish Relations.
