MEHMET YAVAS
Professor of Linguistics

"Perception of Language Varieties: Who Speaks the Best English/Spanish...?"

Mehmet Yavas is a Professor of Linguistics in the English Department at FIU.  His area of concentration is ‘applied phonology.'  He has previously taught at the Catholic University of Porto Alegre, Brazil, and was a visiting fellow at the School of Speech Pathology at Leicester Polytechnic, U.K.  His publications include, in addition to numerous journal articles, Avaliacao Fonologica da Crianca (a phonological assessment procedure for Brazilian Portuguese), Phonological Disorders in Children (Routledge 1991), First and Second Language Phonology (Singular 1994), Phonology: development and disorders (Singular 1998), and the forthcoming Applied English Phonology (Blackwell).
