1. What can I do with a degree in I/O Psychology?

MS: With a Master of Science in IO Psychology one can teach at a Community
College or Four-year Institution, be a member of a
consulting team, go into a limited private consulting practice, or work in
the field of Human Resource Management or Personnel office.
Ph.D.: With a Doctor of Philosophy in IO Psychology one can function in
all of the capacities listed under the MS degree.
In addition, a Ph.D. may be employed as a tenure-track Professor, oversee
research in academic, industrial or governmental settings,
be employed as a test developer, or function as a project director for a
consulting firm.

2. Can I take graduate level classes at FIU
without being admitted into the I /O Psychology Program?

Yes if you pursue the Special Student
classification.

3. How do I apply to become a Special
Student?
|
In order to obtain the status of
Special student, you must go to The Office of Admissions (PC 140)
and apply in person.

4. What courses should I take as a Special Student?
|
If you have not already taken an
undergraduate course in I/O Psychology and an undergraduate course
in Statistics, then you should consider taking these two courses. You may also wish to take some
graduate-level first-year courses. Consult with a program faculty member for additional information.

5. I have a MS degree from another University. Will you accept my
degree? What courses transfer?
|
Depends. A review of each student’s transcripts is done on a
case-by-case basis by the Director of Graduate Studies and the Director of
the I/O Graduate Program to assess the extent to which previously completed
graduate coursework fulfills the FIU
Department of Psychology requirements. A maximum of 12 credits can be
transferred from another institution. Transfer credits can only be
substituted for electives; core I/O courses cannot be transferred.

6. My bachelors degree is not in Psychology. Can I still apply to
the I/O program?
|
Yes, you may apply for admission into
the I/O program provided you have satisfactorily completed specific
courses.

7.
Are there any courses I must take before applying? What are they?
|
Yes. The program requires that you
satisfactorily complete a
Statistics and Research Methods course prior to applying to the
I/O Graduate Program.

8. How do I become part of The Society of Industrial Organizational
Psychology (SIOP)?
|
You can become a SIOP student affiliate. For

If I apply to the PhD program and am not admitted, will I
automatically be considered for the MS program?
|
No. If you are applying to the PhD
program and want to be considered for the MS program also, you need
to state that clearly in your letter of intent.

10. What are some of the
premier research journals in the I/O area?
|
The Journal of Applied Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, Academy
of Management Review, Personnel Psychology, and Organizational Behavior
and Human Decision Processes.
