Area
of Specialization
International
relations theories; the trajectory of the modern world, understanding
the term "modernity" to refer to an ensemble of developments, material
and conceptual, that have dominated Northern Europe and North America
for several centuries.
Research
Prof.
Onuf
has published numerous articles in leading international relations journals
including International Organization, American Journal of
International Law, and International Studies Quarterly.
His research interests in IR theory are deeply affected by major developments
in social theory and by his feminist students. His theoretical
studies culminated in the publication of World of Our Making
1989. In that book, he systematically developed a position he
called "constructivism." With Vandulka Kubálková
of the University of Miami, he has chaired the Miami International Relations
group, a regular faculty and graduate seminar. One result has
been the publication of International Relations in a Constructed
World in 1998, which he co-edited with Kubálková and
his FIU colleague, Paul Kowert. In the meantime, Prof. Onuf co-authored
Federal Union, Modern World (1994) with his brother, Peter, an
historian of the early U.S. This collaboration deepened his interest
in the history of international thought and prompted him to write The
Republican Legacy in International Thought (1998). Before joining
the FIU faculty, Prof.
Onuf has also taught at American University, Columbia University, Georgetown
University, Howard University, Ritsumeikan University, and the University
of Colombo.
