Financial Aid Office: Financial Aid is a source of financial support provided by various agencies (federal, state and local governments, universities, community organizations, and private corporations or individuals) to help students meet the cost of attending college.  It includes gift-aid (grants and scholarships) and self-help (loans and student employment).Students are encouraged to check with the Financial Aid Office to find out what financial aid sources are available to them.  For financial aid information, please contact the Office of Financial Aid (University Park - PC 125, 348-1500 or North Campus - ACI 160, 919-5765).  Financial aid information is also available via internet at (https://registrar3.fiu.edu/FinAid/ ) Here, students can get Financial Aid Forms, Links, and other related information. To access their financial records, students will need their Personal Identification Number (or PIN number) and Student Number.

Graduate Financial Aid: Some of the possible sources of financial aid for graduate students are:

  • The Federal Stafford Loan Program, available for US citizens and residents only, is a need-based loan program which can provide $8,500 for graduate/professional students with an aggregate limit of $65,500 (including undergraduate loans).

  • Graduate Fee Grants are need-based institutional grants for full-time students pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral Degree.  Awards range from $300 to $1,800.
  • Graduate Assistantships/Fellowships: Most Departments and Colleges have a database of scholarships, fellowships, grants and awards related to special fields of interests.  Graduate students may qualify for assistantships/fellowships and other awards offered through individual graduate academic units.  To apply, contact the Dean’s office of your college or department.  Students must research and apply for this type assistance on their own.

  • Other Fellowship Awards: The University, in conjunction with the Dean of Graduate Studies makes fellowship awards to promising graduate students.  These fellowship awards are made on a one time only basis.  Additional fellowships available to graduate students include McKnight doctoral fellowships (for African American candidates) and the Delores Auzenne fellowship.
  • FastWeb is an external internet resource helping students find scholarships for college.  FastWeb matches each student's background, automatically, with eligibility requirements for scholarships from around the country and advises them about scholarship opportunities tailored to them.  All of this is free! Visit FastWeb for more.

  • Grants & Research: The Office of Grants and Research was created to address the funding and research needs of the Division of Student Affairs.  The office seeks to identify funds to strengthen its own infrastructure while at the same time addressing individual departmental needs as defined by staff members.  Anything you need to know about writing and submitting a grant application can be found at their web site.

  • Financial Aid for Athletes: Financial aid is available in all sports offered and both freshmen and transfer students are recruited for FIU's 15 intercollegiate athletic programs.  For more information, visit FIU Athletics.

Undergraduate Financial Aid: The Undergraduate Studies office provides students with an additional list of scholarship and internship resources. For more information about any of these programs, please e-mail Dr. Bill Beesting or call (305) 348-2800 or stop in at PC 245, or see the Undergraduate Studies web page.

International Students: Out-of-State Tuition Exemption:  The Office of International Education, a unit under the Florida Department of Education, offers the availability of out-of-state tuition exemption program to eligible international students.

International students attending any of Florida's state universities/community colleges may be eligible to apply to be considered as residents for tuition purposes only.  In order to qualify, the international student must be from one of the countries with whom Florida Linkage Institutes are established.  A very important condition that students need to meet is that they are required to return home after their tenure of graduate or undergraduate study for a length of time equal to their exemption period.  The institutes have set criteria for the selection of such students.  For more information, please check the International Students and Scholars Services' (ISSS) website at http://www.fiu.edu/~isss/linkages.htm for contact information. International students may also want to check out the finances section of the ISSS website >>> for scholarship suggestions.

Full or partial Out-of-State Tuition Exemption could also be awarded through the Graduate Assistantships (see above). The Graduate Studies Office provides some valuable information on scholarship available to graduate students.  For more information, please see Graduate Studies Financial Aid.

For all the above financial aid, once the allocation decisions are made, the awarding agency (department or academic unit, university, external source) is responsible for notifying the Financial Aid Office of the award.  The Financial Aid Office is then responsible for authorizing disbursement of financial aid according to the terms and conditions specified by the authorizing agency.
