Research
World: The
student research experience may take place in college-level
settings, in individual academic departments, or in specialized
research centers on- or off-campus.
Since opening
its doors in 1972, Florida International University has emphasized
research as a major component of its graduate programs.
FIU has over 50 centers and institutes conducting research
in field as various as biomedical, engineering, environmental
and information sciences.
Notable
research projects and centers include:
Biological
Sciences: a project to develop more precise genetic markers
in human DNA.
Mechanical
Engineering: a program to provide research and support
in several technical areas to develop a cardiac defibrillator
implant.
Physics
and Chemistry: research on the retinal pigment of the
eye.
Psychology:
the National Institute of Mental Health is supporting research
on child anxiety and child phobias. Faculty members are also

well as facilitating classroom and laboratory-based instruction
in critical technology areas.
HCET,
the Hemispheric Center for Environmental Technology,
focuses on the decontamination and decommissioning of nuclear
facilities and the management and reduction of radioactive
and hazardous wastes.
FAST,
the Future Aerospace Science and Technology Center for Cryoelectronics,
focuses on issues relating to the integration and hetero-epoitaxy
of the buffer and dielectric layer with the GaAs semiconductor
and 123 high Tc superconductor layers.
MRC,
the Manufacturing Research Center, supports local industry
in the South Florida region and provides an environment for
advanced manufacturing research.
