Getting Started at FIU

Seven Easy Steps!

Note to International Students - always check with the International Student and Scholar Services if you have any questions. They are located in GC 242 or WUC 257. They can be reached at 305-348-2421 or 305-919-5813.


1. Immunization Policy

Immunizations are required by all State Colleges and Universities in Florida before registration. If this requirement is not fulfilled, go to either:
University Park Campus: Student Health & Wellness Center (HWC), or
Biscayne Bay Campus: Student Health Clinic (SHC).

2. Register for Classes

To register you must have a student identification number, which is your Social Security Number, and your PIN number.

Go to the registrar's office to obtain your pin # with a picture ID at:
- University Park Campus: PC 130
- Biscayne Bay Campus: AC1 100

Ask your advisor whether or not you need to complete an override form from the professor. Override forms, if required, are issued by the professor teaching the course.

Students can register for classes via phone, web, Kiosk, or in person at the registers office.

  • Phone registration: (305) 348-1500
  • Web registration: http://sis.fiu.edu
  • Kiosk registration: Standup Interaction computer terminals located on campus
  • In Person Registration: Go to the Registers Office. You must register in person for classes with override forms.

3. Pay for Classes

If you are receiving a stipend, scholarship, or any kind of university financial aid tuition, you need to go to the Bursar's office to determine if there is a difference you must pay.
To pay tuition you must have a fee payment receipt.
Go to the Cashiers office to pay for your classes.

4. Obtain your FIU Student Identification / Panther Card

The Panther Card is a computerized card that identifies you as an FIU student. It contains your photograph, name, ID number, signature, bar code for library use and a magnetic strip for electronic identification.
The FIU Student ID is essential for checking out library books, use of the FIU Fitness Center, etc.
Bring your paid receipt and a legal photo ID (i.e. driver's license or passport) to the ID office at your respective campus to obtain your FIU student ID card. University Park: GC 104E.

5. Get your FIU Parking Decal

To obtain your FIU parking decal you must bring your drivers license, vehicle registration, and proof of car insurance.
Go to the Department of Parking & Traffic located at:
- University Park Campus- Parking Garage One, first floor
- Biscayne Bay Campus- Wolfe University Center, room 131

6. Get your FIU Student Handbook

FIU Student Handbooks can be obtained the during the first few weeks of classes at the Graham Center.

7. Get your Graduate or Undergraduate Catalog

Catalogs can be obtained online or from the Office of Admissions:

- University Park,
- PC 130 Biscayne Bay, ACI 100
