• Our main goal is to unite the Haitian students on our campus.
  • To demonstrate the diversity that the Haitian Culture has to offer.
  • To be used as a tool to eliminate prejudice and misconceptions that people have about Haiti and the Haitian Culture.
MEETING TIMES: FRIDAYS AT 1:00 P.M. IN GC 286

The Haitian Student Organization was founded in 1988. The organization was formed with the intent to familiarize the students of the university with the Haitian culture and customs. Over the years, the organization has tried to bring forth this rich culture through different types of events. Each semester, cultural events are prepared where Haitian students display their country's dances, songs, music, and poetry. An executive board manages the Haitian Student Organization. The members of the executive board are elected every spring semester for the following academic year. General meetings are held at least once a month. The dates and times of the general meetings vary with the feedback received from the members. Mireille Sylvain-David has been the Haitian Student organization advisor since its formation in 1988. She has always been the most supportive and encouraging person for the club. The secretary keeps a list of the members, and they are informed of all the upcoming activities for the club via e-mail.

The club is opened to all FIU students. HSO really needs all the support that it can get from the students, especially from the Haitian students. Come and make a difference! Any questions or comments may be referred to the following electronic address: fiuhso@hotmail.com or Jorane Manuel

Haiti is a French-speaking Caribbean country, which is the western one-third of the island of Hispaniola, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. West of the Dominican Republic.

Many people have a misconception about Haiti. The moment they hear "Hait" all they think about are the negatives and nothing else. They fail to understand that Haiti is alot more than what they believe.

Haiti was established as the world’s first black republic, and is a mysterious, beautiful, colorful island filled with works of great art and music. Among Haiti’s most celebrated artists are Hollweg Apollon and musician Wyclef Jean, just to name a few.

Haiti is a historical landmark boasting the largest fortress in the Caribbean- The Citadel of La Ferriere, and other lesser forts or palaces built during the time of Napoleon. We also boast one of the Caribbean’s oldest cultures, recently celebrating 200 years of independence. Anywhere you go in Haiti you will surely find a piece of history.

Haiti’s coasts have a collection of the world’s most beautiful beaches. The city of Cap-Haitien is one of Haiti’s premier tourist destinations, it’s historical sites and beaches make for an unforgettable vacation. Saut d' Eau located in central Haiti is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. Jacmel located on the southern end of Haiti is the home of the colorful Haitian carnival. In the metropolitan area one can enjoy the site of the architectural works, such as the Presidential Palace in Port-au-Prince.

The Haitian flag is a red and blue bicolor; for state occasions, the Arms of Haiti are added to the center of the flag on a white background. The colors red and blue were chosen from the French flag. The Haitian arms depict a royal palm in the center topped with a red and blue cap of liberty. There are also six blue and red flags, two smaller red banners on the sides, many weapons (rifles with bayonettes, two yellow cannons and many cannonballs), a drum, an anchor, green grass, and a white banner reading "L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE," meaning "Union is Strength."
