William J. Boykin's career defines the description "Hospitality Entrepreneur." Born in Clarksville, Tennessee on February 13, 1919, William Boykin began his hospitality career in 1959 from the offices he shared with his father, Benton Lamar Boykin, in Cleveland, Ohio. The father-son team who operated a real estate management and brokerage company serving primarily strip center retail real estate, ventured into its first hospitality project in South Bend, Indiana when they opened a one hundred room Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge across from the University of Notre Dame. That early success fueled the development of four more Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and Restaurants through the 1960's. In 1968 Bill Boykin became one of the first Marriott franchisee's when he purchased the rights to develop hotels in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. The company subsequently developed two Marriott Hotels in Columbus, two in Cleveland, a Marriott in Buffalo, New York, in Berkeley, California and the Tenaya Lodge in Yosemite, California. In 1986 the company further developed a Radisson Hotel in Fort Myers, Florida, the Melbourne Quality Suites Hotel in Indialantic, Florida, and in 1996 the Hampton Inn West Miami Airport in Miami, Florida.
The company has gone on to manage numerous properties for individuals and financial institutions. The fruits of this long career are now embodied in the assets of Boykin Lodging Company, a Real Estate Investment Trust, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Sons Robert and John continue the tradition established by William J. Boykin whose commitment to quality and people has been the hallmark of the Boykin name.
