Faculty Achievements

—Department of History Atlantic Studies Colloquium, 2009-2010. Co-sponsored by RUGS and CAS.

— The FIU President's Council presented its Outstanding Faculty Award for 2008 to Prof. Darden A. Pyron. The award was presented at the University's annual Faculty Convocation, where faculty are recognized for academic achievements by their peers. This is an exceptional honor and our congratulations go to Prof. Pyron (along with a luncheon to celebrate the award presented by the Department's Graduate Students Association).

— Prof. N. David Cook's People of the Volcano: Andean Counterpoint in the Colca Valley, co-authored with Sasha Cook, received Honorable Mention for the 2008 MacLeod Book Prize, awarded by the Latin American section of the Southern Historical Association.  The recognition reads as follows: "Noble David Cook and Alexandra Parma Cook¹s People of the Volcano: Andean Counterpoint in the Colca Valley is clearly and beautifully written. The research is breathtaking, stunning in its intimacy with the region. Remarkably illuminating on the importance of ecology and infrastructure, it will become a classic of ethnohistory." Congratulations! (We also note that the 2007 MacLeod Prize was awarded to Prof. Bianca Premo for her book, Children of the Father King. Youth, Authority, and Legal Minority in Colonial Lima).

— Prof. Lara Kriegel's book, Grand Design: Labor, Empire, and the Museum in Victorian Culture, received the 2008 Honorable Mention in the Albion Prize for the Best Book in British Studies after 1800 from the North American Conference on British Studies. The citation notes that her work "is an immensely readable and beautifully illustrated book that examines the production of industrial design and the cultivation of consumer taste in Victorian imperial culture.  At first glance, [it] appears to be a case study of an important museum's 'prehistory,' which in itself would make this book a significant contribution to our understandng of the Victorian culture of collecting and the period's well known 'exhibitionary complex.'  Closer reading of Grand Designs, however, reveals a supremely successful execution of the much more ambitious agenda of locating the Victorian movement for industrial design reform in the progress through which 'the social' and 'the cultural' were severed in a distinctly modern consciousness." Congratulations to Prof. Kriegel!

— Prof. N. David Cook spent several weeks in Peru during the Spring term 2008 delivering lectures on Andean colonial history. He received an honorary appointment to the Department of History at the Pontifica Universidad Catolica del Peru in recognition of his many scholarly contributions to the study of colonial Peruvian society.

— Prof. Alex Lichtenstein was a Fulbright Senior Specialist for two weeks, lecturing on U.S. history at the Center for the Study of the US, Faculty of Political Science, University of Belgrade.

— The 2008 University Torch Awards for Outstanding Achievements were given to two members of the Department of History. Recipients of the Torch Award are recognized for their positive impact on their professions, the community and the University. The award honors the memory of Senator Ernest R. Graham, who helped to create the University.

Professor Mark D. Szuchman, Professor of Latin American History and Department Chair, is the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award.

Professor Seth Bramson, who has taught several courses for the Department, including Florida History and the History of American Railroads, is being honored with the University Torch Award for Community Leadership.

—Prof. Joseph Patrouch has been named H-Net Editor in charge of the HABSBURG discussion group. He will occupy this position for the period 2008-10.

—Prof. Darden Pyron addressed Honors Convocation in the Fall 2007 more....

—Associate Prof. Lara Kriegel and Adjunt Professor Frank Luca have won the 2007 University Teaching Awards. Both were honored at the University Convocation and received their awards from Provost Ron Berkman. The University Tteaching Award is presented annually during convocation after an arduous peer-reviewed process.

—Associate Prof Akin Ogundiran has received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition, signed by  Congressman Kendrik Meek, "in recognition of outstanding and invaluable service to the community."

—With the help of a $20.5 million grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Associate Prof. Victor Uribe is taking leave from the Department to work on a funded program to overhaul criminal procedures in Colombia..... more.

—Assistant Prof. Laura Nenzi was featured in the Japanese newspaper Ibaraki Shinbun.
