ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM 

Applications should include:The official university application form,

  • Transcripts from any post secondary institution(s) attended,
  • Graduate Record Examination scores (Ph.D. applicants only); minimum score is 1120
  • TOEFL scores (if applicable); minimum score is 575.
  • The materials above should be sent to:

    Applicants to both the doctoral and the masters programs should send the following materials directly to the Director of Graduate Studies, and not to the University's Office of Graduate Admissions:

    • writing sample (applicants with an MA thesis may use it as the writing sample)
    • statement of interests and purpose
    • arrange to have two (2) letters of recommendation sent directly to the department's Director of Graduate Studies. These letters should specifically address the applicant's preparation in the study of history and the chances for success in a graduate history program. Please note that recommendation letters that do not indicate a selection regarding the waiver will not be considered.
    • if seeking financial support, the cover letter should stipulate interest in a teaching assistantship
    • applicants to the PhD program should send a current curriculum vitae

    Applicants to the PhD program must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants to the MA must have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.25.

    The application deadline is January 15 for the Ph.D. program and February 15 for the M.A. program.  FIU has Fall admissions only.

    To be fully admitted, applicants must have completed at least 12 semester-hours (on the basis of 3-hour courses) in undergraduate courses in the field of History. Applicants who do not fulfill this requirement may address the deficiency by successfully completing 4 undergraduate (3000-4000 level) History courses at FIU prior to acceptance into the FIU MA programs. These courses can be taken by registering under the category of "Special Student," and will not count toward the MA. (Consult the University Graduate Catalog and the Office of Admissions.) The student must obtain at least the grade of "B" in each of these courses before applying to the graduate programs.

    The Graduate Record Examination and TOEFL scores and the undergraduate grade point average are minimum requirements. All applications are reviewed by the Graduate Studies Committee which makes the final admissions decisions.
