Hurricane Guide
Hurricane season can be a very stressful time for most people as it involves dealing with the unpredictable. For Florida residents, awareness and preparation become key to handling the hurricane season with planned caution. The FIU University Park Wellness Center would like to help you and your family prepare for this hurricane season with our hurricane guide and tips. Here you will find helpful checklists and tips to assist you this hurricane season. Not sure what to do with all the canned food you buy? If so, check out our hurricane/disaster cookbooks which may help decide what to purchase at the store and assist you in preparing healthy dishes.

Planning Ahead
Create a hurricane box in advance
Until a storm is announced, most individuals do not worry about the hurricane season. This results in mad rushes to the stores to purchase whatever supplies you find available at the last minute. This “last minute” approach can rob you of time to prepare your home adequately. Therefore, as hurricane season approaches, you should prepare a hurricane box with all your supplies. Being proactive, will allow you more time to prepare and secure your home.

Purchase a large plastic bin and place all canned foods and bottled water, batteries, manual can opener, flashlight, utensils, paper plates & cups in a secured container at the start of the hurricane season. This will alleviate the need to beat the rush when a hurricane path is forecast in your neighborhood.

Keep updated with news reports & notices
It is important to stay informed when a storm is approaching Florida. This will allow you to make informed decisions about when to implement your hurricane plan. Keep in mind that as the “cone of concern” narrows, anxiety levels increase, so you should try to stay ahead of the game. Make sure that if a storm is in the area, your car is working properly, and you try to keep a full tank of gas.

Preparing Your Home
Since you’ve been proactive in preparing for hurricane season, you will find that you have more time to prepare your home and personal property.

  • Clear your yard of possible debris & secure outdoor furniture.
  • Bring pets indoors.
  • Have plenty of food & water for you & your pets.
  • Remember to safeguard your important documents.
  • Store them in ziplock bags to avoid possible water damage.
  • Have your laptop fully charged & away from possible water damage.
  • Put shutters or plywood over windows & doors according to the guidelines within your community.
  • Park cars as close to your house as possible.
  • Pick up your mail & complete all important tasks before the storm.
