The Statistical Sleuth: A course in method of data analysis, by Fred L. Ramsey and
                                    Daniel W. Schafer, Duxbury Press, 1997.


COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This is the first course in a two-semester sequence.This is an applied statistics course with motivation from the data sets. Some statistical theories  may be necessary for this course. S-plus software (available in PC 322, PC 414 and PC 415) will be used to analyze the data and you will learn how to use S-plus for graphical data analysis. The course will cover chapter 1 to 7 from the textbook. If time permits some of the selected topics from journals or other books will be covered. Full information about the S-Plus software as well as computer lab will be given in the class. http://www.fiu.edu/~statdept/


GRADES:             The final semester grade will be determined by weighting:
                                                    One midterm: 25%
                                                    Homework and a Project: 45%
                                                    Final Exam: 30%


The final exam will be scheduled during the week of December 07-12, 2009. The midterm is scheduled for October 21, 2009.

MAKEUP'S:  will be given only under extreme circumstances (illness- yours or a family member's, or an unforseeable emergency count as extreme circumstances).Contact the instructor in advance if you think that a situation deserves a make up.

 

INCOMPLETES:  will be only given in case of an emergency just before the final exam.Also, no extra credit work will be given to help a student improve their grade.The student must be passing the course in order to qualify for an incomplete.

 
NO BEEPERS OR CELLULAR PHONES ARE ALLOWED IN CLASS.IF YOU MUST CARRY THEM TO CLASS, PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE SWITCHED OFF. ALSO NOTE THAT ANY STUDENT THAT DOES NOT TAKE THE FINAL EXAM WILL AUTOMATICALLY GET A F IN THE CLASS.
