The Gerontological Nutritionists DPG is
the advocate of the dietetic profession serving the public through the promotion
of optimal nutrition, health, and well-being. GN works to:
- provide leadership to dietitians working in the field of aging and
gerontology;
- develop standards of dietetic practice or assist with the development
of such standards in programs and services such as nutrition programs
funded by the Older Americans Act, and services provided in continuum
of health care funded by Medicare, Medicaid, and other mechanisms;
- analyze and respond to new initiatives concerned with aging, food,
nutrition, health, and the well-being of older adults by developing
position papers and utilizing other appropriate methods;
- foster research, evaluate outcomes, and provide a forum for interchange
of knowledge regarding the needs of older adults who are institutionalized,
homebound or residing in community settings;
- assist and/or provide support to national professional and consumer
organizations in the development of educational programs;
- develop nutrition information and materials and become a conduit of
information on nutritional and health related needs for older adults;
- become a conduit of information and, if applicable, interpretation
of national legislative issues affecting older adults and specifically
nutrition/health related issues;
- provide an organized channel for the exchange of ideas, information
and mutual experience with the membership through a quarterly newsletter
and educational activities;
- assist other groups and organizations, when feasible, with information
and resources concerning the provision of quality nutrition services
to older persons; and
- respond to additional purposes as identified through member interest.
