Jan L. Tucker was Professor of Social Science Education and Director
Emeritus of the Global Awareness Program, College of Education, Florida
International University, Miami, Florida.
Jan Tucker earned his doctorate in education in 1968 from Indiana University. Earlier, he received a baccalaureate in social science from Manchester College (Indiana) and a master's degree in history from Indiana University. Jan taught social science in Indiana schools and served on the faculties at Indiana University and Stanford University before coming to Florida International University (FIU) for its inaugural year in 1972.
In 1979, Dr. Tucker established at FIU the Global Awareness Program (GAP). GAP facilitates program development and teacher training in global education through close collaboration with the Dade County Public Schools, the fourth largest school district in the nation. GAP has earned national and international recognition and has acquired more than $2 million in external funding from governmental agencies and major foundations, including the Danforth Foundation, The Hitachi Foundation, and the U.S.-Japan Foundation.
Dr. Tucker's work in global and social science education has resulted in program development statewide and nationally as well as other areas and nations, including the Caribbean, Germany, Japan, Peoples Republic of China, and the United Kingdom. From 1991 to 1997, he worked with the Russian Ministry of Education to develop global education program there.
Dr. Tucker passed away May 16, 1997.

Mohammed Kabiru Farouk is Associate Professor of Social Science Education, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Director of the Global Awareness Program, College of Education, Florida International University, Miami, Florida.
Mohammed Farouk earned his doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction/Social Studies Education in 1990 from West Virginia University. Earlier, he received his baccalaureate in Education and History and master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction/Social Studies Education from Bayero University Kano in Nigeria. Prior to coming to Florida International University, Mohammed taught social science in Nigerian schools and served on the faculties at West Virginia University and Bayero University Kano.
Mohammed Farouk has done research and published articles on social science education, global education, and multicultural education. He has been involved in program development and teacher training

Abubakar Sadiq Abdullahi
Abubakar Sadiq Abdullahi is a doctoral student in social studies education. Sadiq was a teacher of American Government at Coral Park Senior High School in Miami, Florida. Born in Kaduna, Nigeria in 1960, Abubakar was introduced to the game of tennis at the age of ten in Lagos Nigeria. He was offered a tennis scholarship to study Economics at St. Augustine's College, Raleigh, North Carolina. After graduation, Abubakar traveled extensively all over the world as a touring professional player; represented Nigeria in international competitions including the Davis cup (world cup of tennis) and the Seoul Olympics in 1988. Abubakar taught tennis at the famous Doral Resort & Country Club in Miami, Florida, USA, worked closely with the tennis legend late Arthur Ashe. Abubakar believes that only through global understanding and sensitivity to cultural and individual differences can humanity come closer to attain the lofty goal of regional reconciliation and world peace.

Guichun Zong, Ed.D. Graduation Picture
Guichun is an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky. She earned her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction/Social Studies Education in 1999 from Florida International University. Her academic work is focused on general curriculum and instruction, social studies education, global education, and comparative education. Guichun has done extensive research on curriculum and teaching materials through her work at the National Curriculum and Teaching Materials Research Institute in China. She has also worked as an educational editor in People's Education Press, the largest educational publishing press in China, and has taught English grammar at the college level. Since joining Global Awareness Program in 1995, Guichun has involved various activities within the program such as teaching, research, and program development.

Babara Cruz, Ed.D. is Associate Professor of Social Studies Education, College of Education, University of South Florida, 4202 E. Fowler Avenue, Tampa, FL 33620-5650. She is active in redesigning the social studies program at USF to reflect global and multicultural perspectives. She received her doctorate from Florida International University in 1990. Toni F. Kirkwood, Ed.D. is Assistant Professor of Social Studies Education, College of Education, Florida Atlantic University, 777 Glades Road, P.O. Box 3091, Boca Raton, FL 33431-0991. Her most recent research focused on the characteristics of secondary social studies teachers who teach from a global perspective. She received her doctorate in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on global education from Florida International University in 1995.
