Florida International University exhibits an international atmosphere through its concern for global education, its focus on international aspects in the academic disciplines, and a student population from 85 countries. With 32,000 students, Florida International University, a state-supported university located in Miami, is one of the fastest-growing institutions of higher learning in the United States.
The State Plan for Global Education in Florida (1982) defines global education as the process which provides students and individuals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are necessary for them to meet their responsibilities as citizens of the community, state, and nation in an increasingly interdependent and complex global society. In addition, education for a global perspective includes at least the following components:
The Global Awareness Program is an integral part of the College of Education of Florida International University, a state university located in Miami, Florida. The Global Awareness Program works in close collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences, the Dade County Public Schools, and the Florida Department of Education.
Since its inception in 1979, the Program has received more than $2,000,000 in major funding from the United States Department of Education, The Danforth Foundation, The Hitachi Foundation, and the U.S.-Japan Foundation. The Program has presented many campus-based activities. It provides leadership in bringing global education into the regular education degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and through inservice programs for classroom teachers in the local schools.
