Different types of weather such as severe thunderstorms, a tropical weather system or a hurricane can cause flooding problems for Florida. When there is excessive rainfall in a short time span, ditches, rivers and lakes can overflow into low-lying or poorly drained areas and thus creating a flood. Because of Florida's flat terrain, once an area is flooded, it is difficult to drain accumulated water quickly and this can pose a risk to motorists in the area. If your area becomes flooded, please remember the following Do's and Don'ts:

Do

  • Restrict children from playing in flooded areas.
  • Drinking water should be tested before drinking.
  • Stay away from downed power lines.
  • Wash canned goods that come in contact with flood waters with soap and hot water.

Don’t

  • Drive into water of an unknown depth. As little as one foot of water can move most cars off the road. Most flood-related deaths occur at night and are vehicular.
  • Do not use fresh food that has come in contact with floodwaters.
