Why Meteorology?

Meteorologists forecast for weather-sensitive operations, ranging from children's birthday parties to space launches. They provide essential guidance to government, industry, and the public. They study the hows and whys of the Earth's and other planets' atmospheres, teach in universities, and work in print or broadcast media.

FIU's Unversity Park Campus is home to NOAA's South-Florida Forecast Office and National Hurricane Center, the foremost Tropical-Cyclone forecasting organization in the world. Across Biscayne Bay is NOAA's Hurricane Research Division, the only scientific laboratory in the world that routinely flies intrumented airplanes into severe tropical weather.

Although FIU's program is in its early stages, Miami spans a gamut of climatic zones and cultures that make it an ideal place to study the atmosphere and its effects on people and their property. From October into April we see middle-latitudes fronts pushing southward. Starting in late May or early June the South-Florida Sea Breeze brings spectacular thunderstorms. And of course Atlantic Hurricanes make life interesting from midsummer though fall.

Meteorology is a great science because the subject matter is always happening just outside your window. Most meteorologists report excellent job satisfcation, a reasonable income, and plenty of opportunities for adventure. "...you mean they actually pay me to do this..."

Atmospheric Sciences Academic Track
