More About Tithonus . . .
Tithonus was adopted
by the FIU FWEA to help us communicate the need for continued
vigilence in preserving the water environment. The Florida manatee
is an endangered species and protected under Florida state law.
He was adopted from the Save the Manatee Club. When a manatee
is adopted from the Save the Manatee Club, the adoptive
parent receives a complete welcome packet that describes the new
family member. Please note that Tithonus is a wild animal, and
although he usually winters at the Blue Spring State Park, he
is free to roam as he sees fit.
Welcome to the FIU FWEA Tithonus!!!
Now that the FIU FWEA
is an adoptive parent, we get monthly newsletters from the people
at Save the Manatee to keep us posted on Tithonus's whereabouts
! The adoptees were selected from a group of manatees that usually
winter in the Blue Spring State Park, in Orange City, Florida.
A warm spring in the park is an ideal haven from the cool winter
waters.
Tithonus was first identified in 1971. He is a male, approximately
20 years old. Manatees can live to be 60 years old!! Tithonus
is distinguishable by a row of propeller scars that look like
portholes on his left side.
