Our Manatee Adoption Program

In keeping with our stated mission, to preserve and enhance the global water environment, the FIU FWEA has adopted a club Mascot, Tithonus, to help support the Save The Manatee Club's efforts on behalf of this endangered species. Donations for the adoption were collected during the SOC Club Fair.

Donations will help to save one of the most prominent victims of Florida's water-environment degradation--the Florida Manatee. The Manatee serves as a special role model in how the water environment affects us all. This friendly creature is equally at danger from power-boaters and fisherman as he is from agricultural and industrial polluters.

The manatee has no natural enemies, except man. Manatee-hunting, reckless boating, discarded waterborne debris, and loss of habitat through overdevelopment and pollution have all served to push this creature to near-extinction. As a symbol, the Manatee embodies the concept of individual responsibility in relation to environmental protection. That is why all funding for this endeavour is through individual contributions.

We hope you share our concern for this loveable creature. All donations and proceeds help to fund continued research, public education and manatee-rescue efforts.

The Members of the Florida International University Student Chapter of the Florida Water Environment Association.
