FIGs
group first-semester freshmen into small “learning communities”
of twenty-four students with similar interests, often the same intended
majors.
Summer B freshmen stay together for three classes.
Fall freshmen take four or five classes together--usually Writing
and Rhetoric I, First-Year Experience, and classes specifically
chosen for your FIG, such as a science, lab, and social science. Most
FIGs for Fall freshmen are major-based to help you fulfill your
University Core
Curriculum and pre-major requirements.
Summer-B students can often take Fall FIGs, without SLS 1501.

FIGs
increase student success.
FIGs
provide an extra level of personal attention. National research
proves that FIG students are more successful in completing their
degrees. At FIU, FIGs students continue their studies here
at a higher rate than non-FIG ones, and usually complete the semester
with higher grades.

FIG
students work together to explore the interrelationships.

helps make connections between courses by focusing on transferable
skills, critical thinking, and communication in addition to disciplinary
knowledge.
