FIGs group first-semester freshmen into small “learning communities” of twenty-four students with similar interests, often the same intended majors.

Summer B freshmen stay together for three classes.

Fall freshmen take four or five classes together--usually Writing and Rhetoric I, First-Year Experience, and classes specifically chosen for your FIG, such as a science, lab, and social science.  Most FIGs for Fall freshmen are major-based to help you fulfill your University Core Curriculum and pre-major requirements.

Summer-B students can often take Fall FIGs, without SLS 1501.

FIGs make you feel at home at FIU.

FIGs create closer relationships with both your fellow students and your professors, and that translates into more involvement and a more positive transition to college life.  With almost 39,000 students, FIU is BIG!

FIGs increase student success.

FIGs provide an extra level of personal attention.  National research proves that FIG students are more successful in completing their degrees.  At FIU, FIGs students continue their studies here at a higher rate than non-FIG ones, and usually complete the semester with higher grades.

FIGs ensure convenient schedules.

We reserved the most popular courses and time blocks for FIG students only.  Join a FIG and you’re automatically enrolled in the cluster of classes.   FIGs make registration a breeze!

FIGs guarantee your enrollment in classes that fulfill graduation requirements.

FIGs meet the “into-major” requirements you’ll later need and fulfill the University Core Curriculum for you intended major..

FIG students work together to explore the interrelationships.

Taking a cluster of classes with a core group of 25 students helps make connections between courses by focusing on transferable skills, critical thinking, and communication in addition to disciplinary knowledge.
