U.S. warns citizens to be cautious in Cuba

WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuter) - The U.S. State Department issued a statement late on Thursday warning U.S. travelers to Cuba to be vigilant about their personal safety in light of recent bombings at tourist sites in Havana.

Havana hotels and nightclubs frequented by foreign tourists have been the target of bombings since the spring of this year. The bombs have been small, but potentially dangerous and have killed one person.

``The recent arrest by Cuban authorities of a foreign national suspected of planting the bombs does not remove the possibility of additional bombing at any time,'' the State Department said.

It said travelers to Cuba should exercise caution in public areas and be alert for any unattended packages or bags.

Under Washington's strict embargo against Cuba, it is illegal for Americans to visit the Caribbean island except for some humanitarian or educational purposes.
