Havana, Oct 6 (EFE).- Employees of the Transportation Ministry will be the first in Cuba to receive their wages on Tuesday via an automatic teller, according to Monday's edition of the weekly publication "Trabajadores."
The teller has been installed in a new branch of the Banco Popular de Ahorro (BPA), located in the Transportation Ministry building in Havana, where five of the ministry's state-owned firms can carry out their transactions.
Julio Perez, BPA director in Havana province, said all ministry employees will receive a debit, or ATM, card with a secret personal identification number, known in the United States as the "PIN" number.
According to Perez, employees will use this card to carry out all their transactions, beginning with their next paycheck, on a schedule convenient to them.
He said that they can withdraw a desired amount of money from their paychecks, or they could let their funds accumulate in their accounts, even though the money will not earn any interest at the moment.
The new bank branch also offers depositors the option to pay for government services, including gas, electricity, telephone and water, by having the payments automatically withdrawn from one's paycheck.
He also said that as the use of the teller increases, many millions of pesos will be removed from circulation, which will help the economy. EFE
