Critic accuses Cubans, Sandinistas of abuses

A Nicaraguan critic of the former Sandinista government has accused Sandinista and Cuban security officials of murdering and torturing hundreds of political opponents in the early 1980s.

Reynaldo Aguado, jailed by the Sandinistas from 1984 until their electoral defeat in 1990, told a news conference in Miami on Tuesday he wants the Sandinista and Cuban officials brought to trial and their victims compensated.

Aguado singled out former Sandinista domestic security chief Lenin Cerna, who recently retired from the army, and Gen. Fabian Escalante, one of the top Cuban military advisors to the Sandinistas in the 1980s.
