THE THOUSAND-AND-ONE TURNS OF THE NUT

By Lucas Garve, Agencia de Prensa Independiente de Cuba (APIC)

HAVANA, 28 de agosto (APIC). You could call it Kafkian, because it was so absurd, what happened to a citizen of Artermisa- in 1996, no less! He told us that on March 25th he took a tire to a repair shop located at 20th Street and Central Highway, where he was told the work would be completed in approximately two weeks, if the shop received the fuel oil needed for the repair.

At the end of the two weeks, the Artemisan went to the shop to hear that it would be another two weeks for the tire to be repaired. Following this, he returned to hear that it was necessary to separate the fuel oil reserved for defense purposes, from that which could be utilized to fix tires. He'd have to come back in another two weeks.

He called a week later and was informed that the tire was ready, but when he went to pick it up, he was informed that there was an audit going on from the economic committee, and that they could not take his money. He'd have to return the following day.

He returns to the shop on May 31st, and to his dismay, he finds out that the person in charge was absent that day. He would have to come back a day later. Finally, on June 3, as he was inspecting the tire, which he assumed had been repaired, he noticed that the hole that had caused the tire to malfunction was not repaired. They had fixed a much smaller one. He asked to talk to the shop's manager, and the only solution offered was for him to wait another two weeks to get the the tire fixed at last. Believe it or not, these situations happen quite often in the island of the green sugar cane and the tallest palm trees. They are signs of the supposed economic recovery proclaimed by the Cuban communist regime.
