HAVANA, February 13, 1997 (BPIC).- In what has become a boomerang for the Cuban government, is what the acts of repudiation, orchestrated by the political police against the independent journalists in Havana, have turned.
The population of several different neighborhoods where they live, instead of becoming fearful, they have been attending by the hundreds the homes of the journalists to offer their support and in other cases to get to know them. The same has happened with the dissidents and opposition party members and political organizations and human rights organizations as soon as they've heard of the acts (of repudiation).
Such extraordinary expression of support allows us to regain our strength and we are convinced, the independent journalists and our collaborators, that we have chosen the only path which we can rightfully take at this time-- that of decorum in the hope of obtaining, for our people, the right to travel a democratic path of respect for the citizenry where the priority is for all to live peacefully and where individuals do not practice hatred as the main weapon in their social and spiritual relations.
It is not us who is instigating this unmeasured wrath, this brutal intransigence. It is the Cuban governing elite and their repressive apparatus. They hold the power and the force, and even having it, they use para-military to pit Cuban against Cuban.
We are supported by the inalienable right to live in accordance with out mendal evolution and dignity, as human beings that we are. Such a right is with us today because many of us made mistakes, and I repeat myself, for a very long time.
And we support the worst that has taken this suffering people to travel through, which is to travel the dark path of communist doctrine. Man is not an amorphous mechanism, and nature allows at times, thank God, for our psychological resources to work well, and some day and for always say: "Enough already, I made a mistake. This baggage of frustrations and dissappointment I won't carry anyone, I have enough courage. Because fear, you feel, and courage, you have. And I, from now on, will face life through a path of decorum, regardless of what happens. Tomorrow, history will tell who deserves honor and who deserves his tomb to be spit upon".
